E-Learning Module Urban Green Spaces

The University of Twente ITC together with Tropenbos Suriname developed this e-module on urban green spaces in the tropics in the context, and using the results, of their UTSN Twinning project on "Towards a green and more livable Paramaribo". With this e-module we aim to provide access to quality learning material for Surinamese and Dutch MSc students and other learners. This e- module is designed to be used in two ways, i) within a course, introducing students to the subject of urban green benefits and management. ii) as stand-alone short course. The module is entirely self-study and can be followed without an internet connection. Cite as: Schwarz. N. and Willemen L., 2021. Techno-moral scenarios - Educational format

: In this module, students are confronted with a possible future scenario in which a specific future application of a novel technology is imagined along with all the consequences, good and bad, it may have. Such a techno-moral scenario (called a ‘vignette’) stimulates students in formulating emotions, arguments and questions. By researching such questions through moral scenarios, students learn about the specifics of certain applications. Students are asked to make a techno-moral scenario themselves. They will have to imagine what a society would look like if a specific new technology was broadly adopted in 25-50 years from now. Students should formulate a narrative that helps reflect on potential dilemmas and present it in an audio-visual manner. These lessons are meant to prepare students for a future in which these developments become more common, in order to discuss which developments are desirable.

Taking Stock of Feelings (Educational Format)

This exercise is a short, activating method to open a class, course or topic with. Students are asked to list their moral emotions and feelings while [today’s topic] is introduced. The exercise can either be used as a quick, fresh way to open with, or as a preparation for another (SURF) exercise. A suggestion for a follow-up assignment in which students create a techno-moral scenario is also included here.

Misconduct – Volkswagen’s ‘Defeat Design’ [Teacher version]

In this CBE students will reflect on the theme of misconduct by considering the case of the ‘dieselgate’ emission-scandal that got public attention in 2015. They are expected to do a bit of research beforehand or watch the Netflix episode of Dirty Money on Volkswagen (season 1, episode 1). Students will contemplate on the different roles of responsibility involved in the case and will assume the perspectives of involved actors as an exercise. Accordingly, they will create a moral scenario, a story, as a tool to reflect on the different values at stake in this case of misconduct and to conceive of strategies of ethical anticipation.

From extinction to de-extinction: CRISPR/Cas9 and biodiversity

CRISPR/Cas9 technology allows selectively editing (i.e. deleting or inserting) gene sequences in any organism to change its genetic profile. In humans, this technology carries the promise of eradicating certain genetic diseases. Recently, however, it has been used to tinker with biodiversity: bringing some extinct animals back to life and alternatively, making some species go extinct. However, it is not fully clear yet how to control this technology (e.g. not eradicate the whole species but only control its population), how to prevent the accidental release of this technology and to prevent doomsday terrorist scenarios.

Digital Twins in Healthcare (teacher version)

Digital twins are an emerging technology that create a digital representation of an individual’s health and disease status. Based on lifestyle and genetic data, the representation will be continuously updated in order to reflect the health status of an individual over time. The technology promises to open up new avenues towards prevention and precision health care.

Examples of boundary crossing learning activities

This document shows a variety of possible learning activities you can implement in your course. Every activity is described in how it could be used in a course, including several alternative options (though certainly not exhaustive!), the boundaries that are crossed, and the BC learning mechanisms that are typically addressed via this learning activity. The examples are meant to inspire you to make these activities your own or think of new kinds of boundary crossing learning activities yourself.
