A Brief Introduction to Biochemistry

How do cells convert simple nutrients to living biomass? The simple answer is through a series of controlled chemical reactions called metabolism. But what are these chemical reactions, how are they controlled, and how are they arranged into a metabolic network that assembles complex cells while obeying the rules of chemistry and physics? In this brief introduction, we explore enzymes (structure, kinetics, and regulation), bioenergetic principles of reaction coupling and redox reactions, and give a taste of metabolic pathways and regulation. The book is designed for students with a minimal background in chemistry.

Measuring academic impact: An author-level metric: the H-index

An author-level metric: the h-index The H-index, proposed by physicist J.E. Hirsch (hence the H) in 2005, is a way to measure the individual academic output of a researcher. Which H-index? To create the list of publications and the number of citations received you can use different sources. Determining the H-index in Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar In these handouts you can find the steps to determine the H-index of a researcher in. Related. Support.

Future News

This exercise offers an innovative working method to do in class or online. Students will do a small bit of research and use their findings to write a fictive news article from the future to consider consequences of applications of [the technology at stake]. The fictive writing-assignments offer an opportunity for students to reflects on an ethical issue by means of narrative. Articles can be shared among the group when finished.W

RPG - Discussing allocation of responsibilities and approaches to deal with them [student version]

In this CBE, students will hold discussions using different cases with various ethical dilemma’s concerning GMO’s. Students are asked to represent different stakeholders, which they will have to identify themselves. Students discuss a worst-case scenario and a responsibility allocation. Subsequently, students are asked to think of strategies in their role as a stakeholder to deal with such worst-case scenarios in advance and can make use of Value Sensitive Design.

The Future and Synthetic Biology

Because we are nowadays able to modify living organisms through genetic manipulation, it has become possible to patent the process of modification. This situation creates a new form of ownership on the products of genetic engineering: who is responsible for the potential consequences of the changed organism? In this exercise, students will look into real-life applications of synthetic biology. Some small exercises will help to provide orientation in the realm of ethical issues connected to genetically modifying organisms. Afterwards, students will write a fictive news article from the future to consider the consequences of applications of the new technology of synthetic biology.
