A value sensitive analysis of 13 cases in ICT ethics

The exercise proposes a step-by-step activity in which students will perform a value sensitive design analysis of 13 cases related to computer sciences/ ICT technologies. Students are asked to analyse a technology case in small groups. They are asked to identify the underlying value conflict that pertains to contrasting stakeholders’ views. Students do so through group work by selecting and working on one morally salient case study with an identifiable ethical problem (the exercise offers 13 such cases to pick from, but instructors are encouraged to add their own cases to this list). The students are encouraged to solve the value conflict by searching for already existing solutions proposed by different stakeholders (for example, designers, journalists, scholars, engineers, policy makers, etc.), and then analysing how a particular solution prioritizes certain values over others.

Big Tech is watching you with Guilel Treiber | In a Nutshell

What makes scrolling on our phones dangerous? What does our scrolling have to do with digital surveillance? And who is surveilling whom, and for what reason? In this episode, Jara explores the unsettling world of digital surveillance. Together with this week’s guest, Guilel Treiber, she uncovers who the surveillers of the digital world are and peeks behind the curtains of their sleek self-staging to reveal their hidden desires. Yes, this episode will probably make you feel a strong urge to throw your phone away. But luckily, Guilel has some ideas on how to resist digital surveillance without having to live off the grid. Guilel is an assistant professor of ethics and political philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology, and Religious Studies. One of his specializations is the societal stakes of digitalization. If you want to delve deeper into the rabbit hole of digital surveillance, follow Guilel’s suggestions and listen to the podcasts Black Box by The Guardian and The Coming Storm by the BBC. Or read the books suggested by Guilel (best in conjunction): Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Edit: Jara Majerus Cover: Antonia Leise

Publication strategies & Open Access: Open Access publishing

Open Access publishing. How does Open Access affect YOU as researcher. For you as researcher there are two sides to the Open Access coin. Why would you publish in Open Access For a variety of reasons. The most obvious one of all we have just mentioned: you write to be read; and the more people who can read what you wrote, the better. This holds for you as an individual researcher, but it also holds for the Erasmus university as a collective body of academic researchers. Related. Suggested.

Interactive session: Risk & Risk mitigation

Recognize, analyze and discuss the necessity and the role of security testing in AI. Employ documents, such as the AI Act, to classify use cases into risk categories. Discuss in-depth and with common European vocabulary on AI risk and how can AI be designed safely and benevolently, in ways that will not expose humans to unacceptable risks of harm, even when risky behaviour may advance a system goal. Classify the obligations of providers and users in relation to AI risk management. Discuss the requirements for high-risk AI systems as per the AI Act. Elaborate and recognize specific risks and risk taxonomies, relevant throughout the different stages of the AI lifecycle.
