The EU and China: Partners, Competitors or Rivals? | Radboud Reflects Lecture with Guangyu Qiao-Franco, Bart Jacobs and Angela Wigger

How can the EU rely on Chinese technology without ignoring the risks? The EU depends heavily on China for technologies like solar panels and electric vehicle batteries needed for the energy transition. But this same partner also brings security, economic, and political risks. What kind of trade relationship should the EU pursue with China? And how does Europe fit into China’s global ambitions? Listen to political scientist Guangyu Qiao-Franco, cybersecurity expert Bart Jacobs and political scientist Angela Wigger about the complexity of the China-EU relation. Self-study module Introduction to Plant Biology - Photosynthesis light-dependent reaction

This self-study module is part of the series ‘Introduction to Plant Biology’ and introduces the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis and their role in converting light energy into chemical energy. It is designed for students studying basic plant biology and for teachers seeking clear explanations and illustrative figures for educational use. The module explains the two photosynthetic reactions: light-dependent and light-independent, with a focus on the processes occurring in the chloroplast during the light-dependent phase. Students explore the formation of the energy carriers ATP and NADPH, the splitting of water into oxygen, and the role of fluorescence as an indicator of disturbances in the photosynthetic process and therefore plant health.

This self-study module is part of the series ‘Introduction to Plant Biology’ and focusses on plant anatomy. It is designed for students studying basic plant biology and for teachers seeking clear explanations and illustrative figures for educational use. The module covers the plant life cycle and provides a basic understanding of plant structure and function, from plant cells to whole organs. Students explore the anatomy of plant organs (stem, root, leaf, flower, and seed) and specialized cell types such as stomata and root hairs. In addition, the module introduces key plant cell organelles, including the nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, vacuole and the cell wall, and explains their roles in plant function.

Novel Switchable Glazing Assemblies for Privacy & Glare Control in a Mediterranean Climate

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Etienne Magri details a research study investigating the combination of PDLC and SPD adaptive glazing technologies to enhance glare control in buildings, using Malta's subtropical climate as a case study. The project involved testing individual and combined laminates within a scale model, evaluating visual appearance and glare using DGP metrics. Results demonstrated that the combined technologies achieved near-complete blackout, effectively eliminating solar glare while maintaining privacy, and successfully transformed static facades into dynamic systems with adjustable transparency. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Etienne Magri for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Water-Filled Glass as a Heat Displacement System for Saving Energy in Buildings

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Brandon Mok introduces Water-filled Glass (WFG), a technology that replaces the gas in an Insulating Glass Unit (IGU) with a water layer connected to a mechanical system with a heat exchanger and pump. The core function is to manage a building's energy demand by controlling the water temperature to optimize the glass surface temperature, thereby reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling. Studies show WFG can provide 47-72% better energy savings than double glazing and 34-61% better than triple glazing. The presentation further explores a novel concept called SEED (Saving Energy through Energy Distribution), which uses the WFG system to redistribute heat from building facades requiring cooling to those requiring heating simultaneously. A preliminary simulation for office buildings in London and New York showed that WFG alone achieved 58-72% energy savings, with the SEED concept providing an additional 10-13% in savings by balancing energy demands across different orientations. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Brandon Mok for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Luxottica Headquarter

In this video Nicola Greco explains the design and technical challenges of creating a fully transparent "crystal" building for the Luxottica headquarters in Milan's historical Palazzo Litta garden. The central architectural concept was achieved using a double-skin facade, which balances maximum transparency with high energy performance. Key challenges included selecting high-quality, low-iron glass with specialized coatings to minimize visual distortion and minimizing the visual impact of framing to maintain transparency. The passively ventilated double-skin facade provides a thermal buffer in winter and uses natural ventilation to remove heat in summer, with its performance validated through detailed steady-state and CFD simulations. The design also integrated innovative maintenance solutions, such as a rope access system within the cavity, to preserve the building's clean aesthetic. Special thanks to Nicola Greco for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Adaptive Expertise Assessment

Introduction to Environmental Sustainability in Glass

In this video Rebecca Hartwell outlines the two key factors for sustainable glass design: material efficiency and energy efficiency. Material efficiency focuses on reducing the environmental impact from production to end-of-life, guided by the "9R framework". Energy efficiency concerns the glass's role in reducing a building's operational energy for heating, cooling, and lighting. The video explains that while advancements like double glazing and low-E coatings have improved energy efficiency, they often create complex, multi-material assemblies that are difficult to disassemble and recycle. Consequently, unlike container glass, most post-consumer flat glass is rarely recycled and is often downcycled or landfilled. A whole life-cycle perspective, balancing embodied and operational carbon, is essential for a sustainable glass future. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Glass Sustainability: Reduce

In this video Mauro Overend and Rebecca Hartwell outline strategies to meet EU net-zero targets by addressing both demand-side and supply-side emissions. Demand-side approaches, influenced by designers, include using less material through efficient structural design, relaxing deflection limits to allow for thinner glass, and improving building energy performance with high-performance glazing. A key focus is increasing the use of recycled glass cullet, which can reduce melting energy and process emissions, though current post-consumer cullet use remains below 5%. Supply-side approaches involve the glass industry switching to low-carbon energy sources like hydrogen or electricity and exploring alternative raw materials to reduce process emissions. The video concludes that a combination of smarter design, increased recycling, and cleaner production is essential for reducing the glass sector's environmental footprint.
