Cast Glass

In this video, Telesilla Bristogianni and Faidra Oikonomopoulou explain the process and potential of glass casting as a method for creating three-dimensional architectural components. This technique allows for the creation of complex, solid glass shapes that fully utilize the material's high compressive strength. The process is divided into two main types based on the starting state of the glass. Primary casting involves founding glass from raw ingredients and includes methods like hot pouring. Secondary casting, or kiln casting, involves reheating pre-made solid glass pieces in a single kiln. A critical step is annealing, the controlled cooling to relieve internal stresses, a process that becomes lengthier for thicker pieces. The molds that are used are either disposable (for unique shapes, rough finish) or permanent (for series production, smooth finish). The main architectural limitation is the immense annealing time for large components, confining most applications to brick-sized units. However, topology optimization (reducing mass while maintaining stiffness) can drastically cut cooling times, enabling future large-scale, monolithic glass structures. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Telesilla Bristogianni and Faidra Oikonomopoulou for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. FiReGlass - Glass beams with defined fire resistance

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Maximilian Möckel, from TU Dresden, discusses fire resistent glass beams. In the construction industry, the application of load-bearing laminated safety glass (LSG), such as glass beams or glass columns, is of particular importance in terms of preventive structural fire protection. LSG with a transformation temperature of individual components of up to 550 °C conse-quently loses its load-bearing capacity. In co-operation between Hero Fire GmbH, Taupitz GmbH & Co. KG and the Institute of Building Construction of the TUD Dresden University of Technology, LSG-beams were developed for use as load-bearing elements with defined fire resistance. The newly developed FiReGlass beam compris-es a load-bearing LSG core, which is protected from the fire exposure by two protection systems. The glass surfaces and lower glass edges are protected by an all-round protection system compris-ing fire protection gel and sacrificial panes. This system is integrated into the support structure. These new developments enable the realization of comprehensive fire protection and defined fire resistance. For further details, please refer to the linked publication. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Maximilian Möckel for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. RElastiCity: een stedelijk veerkrachtig spel

NOTE: This is the Dutch version of RElastiCity: An urban resilience game. It includes showcases of actual use in real world settings (including in the Healthcare Domain). For the English version of the game, please see the related materials.

The European Experience

The European Experience brings together the expertise of nearly a hundred historians from eight European universities to internationalise and diversify the study of modern European history, exploring a grand sweep of time from 1500 to 2000. Offering a valuable corrective to the Anglocentric narratives of previous English-language textbooks, scholars from all over Europe have pooled their knowledge on comparative themes such as identities, cultural encounters, power and citizenship, and economic development to reflect the complexity and heterogeneous nature of the European experience. Rather than another grand narrative, the international author teams offer a multifaceted and rich perspective on the history of the continent of the past 500 years. Each major theme is dissected through three chronological sub-chapters, revealing how major social, political and historical trends manifested themselves in different European settings during the early modern (1500–1800), modern (1800–1900) and contemporary period (1900–2000). This resource is of utmost relevance to today’s history students in the light of ongoing internationalisation strategies for higher education curricula, as it delivers one of the first multi-perspective and truly ‘European’ analyses of the continent’s past. Beyond the provision of historical content, this textbook equips students with the intellectual tools to interrogate prevailing accounts of European history, and enables them to seek out additional perspectives in a bid to further enrich the discipline.

Making History: Reflections of a History Student in the Archive

I invite you to learn what it takes to produce historic knowledge. My writing aims at anyone interested in history as a discipline and its inner workings. Other history students might profit from reading about my ex¬periences and encounters with historic research in particular. And some might just be interested how history ‘is made’. Finally, I hope that a few will enjoy following my personal development and appreciate the extra knowledge offered. By recording my archival research in this way, my booklet wants to contribute to accessible and public academia.
