Self-study module Introduction to Plant Biology - Plant hormones

This self-study module is part of the series ‘Introduction to Plant Biology’ and introduces plant hormones, explaining how chemical signaling enables communication and coordination within plants. It is designed for students learning basic plant biology and for teachers seeking clear figures and explanations for educational use. The module covers fundamental concepts of cell signaling and signal transduction and examines the functions and interactions of major plant hormones, including auxin, cytokinin, abscisic acid, gibberellins, ethylene, salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, brassinosteroids, and strigolactones, in regulating plant growth, development, and responses to the environment.

Virtual sea-going marine science fieldwork with VirtualShip

Marine science relies heavily on fieldwork at and in the ocean for data collection. Consequently, marine science students need training in sea-going fieldwork. However, such training is expensive, logistically demanding, and environmentally burdensome because research vessels emit substantial amounts of CO₂. To provide students with an opportunity to experience the realities of working at sea, we developed a platform for virtual oceanic fieldwork: the VirtualShip Classroom, which provides Python code, exercises, and 360 videos as virtual reality (VR) covering different aspects of fieldwork such as expedition planning, sampling, and data analysis. Whenever possible, students work with authentic tools and realistic datasets, such as the Marine Facilities Planning platform for designing research expeditions. Basic programming skills are advantageous, particularly when students analyze self-collected data. Students formulate their own research question in a region of the global ocean of their choice. They then investigate this question with a virtual research vessel operated through the bespoke VirtualShip software. Instruments currently implemented for deployment or onboard use are ADCP, CTD, XBT, Argo floats, surface drifters, and underway temperature and salinity sensors. This collection of teaching materials is accompanied by a suggested workflow, which outlines a series of classes on virtual ocean research.

Code of conduct for your VirtualShip group

This code of conduct can be used in VirtualShip to make students think about collaboration within their group and how to distribute their grade. Note that the Code of Conduct applies to the actual collaboration within your group in the VirtualShip Assignment; so is not about how you would work on the ship.

Self-study module Introduction to Plant Biology - Abiotic stress

This self-study module is part of the series ‘Introduction to Plant Biology’ and introduces abiotic stress in plants and explains how plants cope with and adapt to challenging environmental conditions. It is designed for students learning basic plant biology and for teachers seeking clear figures and explanations for educational use. The module covers key abiotic stresses - heat, cold, flooding, drought, salinity, and high light intensity - and examines the physiological, structural, and adaptive strategies plants use to survive and grow under these conditions.

Self-study module Introduction to Plant Biology - Plant nutrients

This self-study module is part of the series ‘Introduction to Plant Biology’ and introduces plant nutrients and their essential roles in plant growth and development. It is designed for students studying basic plant biology and for teachers seeking clear explanations and illustrative figures for educational use. The module explores the distinction between macronutrients and micronutrients, provides examples of key nutrients, and explains how plants respond to different types of nutrient deficiencies. In addition, it addresses how nutrient management practices in agriculture are used to prevent deficiencies and reduce yield losses.

A virtual research cruise to characterise the North Sea water system

In this assignment you will learn to set up your own virtual research cruise, during which you will ‘measure’ biophysical oceanographic properties and analyse them. The ocean is not an easy place to perform measurements. It covers a vast area, is not always easy to access (think about the deep ocean), and measuring comes with obstacles. We’re bound by shiptime (which is expensive), the types of instruments that are available (they may break), the weather (storms), sea-ice, seasickness… As research cruises are time consuming and costly, it is important to plan very well. One tool that can help scientists in planning their cruise is VirtualShip. In this assignment, you will use VirtualShip and design a measurement campaign in the North-West European Shelf region, aimed at measuring a cross-section from the open ocean, via the North Sea, towards the coast of Zeeland in the south-west of the Netherlands. Included is a rubric for grading the student reports.
