Measure Sustainability: LCA

In this video, Angelica Rota explains the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and its specific application to glass products. The LCA is a standardized process that evaluates a product's environmental impact from raw material extraction ("cradle") to final disposal ("grave"). The assessment follows four phases: defining the goal and scope, conducting a life cycle inventory, assessing the environmental impacts, and interpreting the results. For construction products like glass, the life cycle is divided into modules covering production, use, end-of-life, and potential benefits from recycling. The findings of an LCA are often published in an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), a verified document that communicates transparent environmental data. For flat glass, the manufacturing stage is the most environmentally intensive, contributing the vast majority to its global warming potential due to the high energy required to melt raw materials. Increasing the use of recycled glass cullet is a key strategy for reducing this impact, as it significantly lowers the energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions of the melting process. Understanding LCA is crucial for identifying environmental hotspots and driving more sustainable practices in glass production and use. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Angelica Rota for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. An analysis of the current developments and scenarios for the transition to a fossil-free energy society this century

This century, greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxides must be significantly reduced. Greenhouse gases absorb and emit infrared radiation that contributes to global warming, which can lead to irreversible negative consequences for humans and the environment. Greenhouse gases are caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal, and natural gas, but livestock farming and agriculture are also to blame. In addition, deforestation contributes to more greenhouse gases. Of the natural greenhouse gases, water vapor is the main cause of the greenhouse effect, accounting for 90%. The remaining 10% is caused from high to low by carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone. In addition, there are industrial greenhouse gases such as fluorinated hydrocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride, and nitrogen trifluoride that contribute to the greenhouse effect too. Greenhouse gases are a major cause of climate change, with far-reaching consequences for the welfare of humans and animals. In some regions, extreme weather events like rainfall are more common, while others are associated with more extreme heat waves and droughts. Sea level rise caused by melting ice and an increase in forest fires are undesirable effects of climate change. Countries in low-lying areas fear that sea level rise will force their populations to move to the higher-lying areas. Climate change is affecting the entire world. An estimated 30-40% o f the carbon dioxide released by the combustion of fossil fuels dissolves into the surface water, resulting in an increased concentration of hydrogen ions. This causes the seawater to become more acidic, resulting in a decreasing of carbonate ions. Carbonate ions are an important building block for forming and maintaining calcium carbonate structures of organisms such as oysters, mussels, sea urchins, shallow water corals, deep sea corals, and calcareous plankton.

Façade EPD

In this lecture, Janneke Verker-Evers, Sustainability Leader at Scheldebouw (Permasteelisa Group), discusses the environmental impact of customised façades and the process of creating Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Learners will gain insight into the challenges of compiling a lifecycle analysis for unitised façades, considering factors like material types, manufacturing processes, transportation, and installation. The lecture also covers how Permasteelisa Group uses early-stage EPDs to optimize façade designs by reducing materials, comparing options, and selecting low-carbon suppliers. The focus is on improving embodied carbon in future designs by making informed decisions from the outset of a project. Additionally, the EPD for the Curtain Wall FT01A of the "n2" building in London is available as supplementary material at the link shared below. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project, in collaboration with Permasteelisa Group and the NewMedia Centre at TU Delft. The creation of these resources has been (partially) funded by the ERASMUS+ grant program of the European Union under grant no. 2022-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000089750. 1. Modulebeschrijving Waterstoftechnologie (basis) K1049
