Introduction to Stochastic Hydrology

Hydrologic systems are both complex and extremely heterogeneous in time and space. As hydrological models are simplified versions of reality, their predictions are by definition subject to uncertainty. The field of stochastic hydrology focuses on quantifying this uncertainty along with prediction. This book aims to present an overview of the field of stochastic hydrology at an introductory level. A wide range of topics and methods will be treated, while each topic and method is only treated at a basic level: descriptive statistics; probability and random variables; hydrological statistics and extremes; random functions; time series analysis; geostatistics; forward stochastic modeling; and state prediction and Kalman filtering. The book can be used for a 10-15-week course at third-year undergraduate or first-year graduate level.

ACA-bot

ACA-bot is an engaging chatbot designed for Automated Conversational Assessment (ACA). Drawing inspiration from traditional oral exams, this text-based conversational agent transforms assessment into a dynamic learning experience. It supports both formative and summative evaluation by offering students personalised feedback and guidance at every step of their learning journey. The first ACA-bot prototype focuses on assessing students’ understanding of basic statistical concepts, but its flexible design allows for easy adaptation to a wide range of subjects and learning contexts. Through interactive dialogue, students can practise explaining ideas clearly under exam-like conditions, apply their knowledge to new and challenging questions, and refine their reasoning as they respond to follow-up prompts. They gain valuable insights into their own understanding, identify areas for improvement, and gradually build confidence for both oral and written assessments. For educators, ACA-bot offers a powerful way to scale oral examinations and enhance formative assessment without increasing workload. It automates parts of the assessment process, provides structured and actionable insights into student performance, and opens the door to more personal, interactive feedback at scale. By combining the strengths of conversational AI and educational assessment, ACA-bot turns evaluation into a collaborative, insightful process. It empowers students to think aloud, reason more effectively, and grow, while giving educators a smarter, more innovative way to understand and support learning.

Improving Health Care with Clinical Prediction Models

Clinical prediction models are increasingly used to support health care decisions, helping clinicians estimate disease risk, guide treatment choices, and tailor care to individual patients. At the same time, advances in data science and artificial intelligence have led to a rapid expansion of prediction modelling research. Yet despite this growth, only a small proportion of published models ever reach clinical practice. Improving Health Care with Clinical Prediction Models – From Idea to Impact shows how you can bridge this gap. The book guides readers through the full pathway of prediction modelling in health care: from defining a meaningful clinical problem and identifying existing models to developing, validating, evaluating, and implementing prediction model–based innovations. Combining methodological guidance with real-world clinical examples, the book explains not only how to build robust prediction models but also how to ensure they become useful tools in everyday care. Written in an accessible style and requiring only a basic understanding of statistical modelling, it provides students, researchers, and clinicians with a practical roadmap for turning prediction models into innovations that are useful, usable, and used. What this book helps you do This book takes you through the complete process of clinical prediction modelling, from the first idea for a model to its implementation in health care practice. Along the way, readers learn how to: Define a meaningful clinical problem and identify where prediction models can improve health care Find and critically evaluate existing prediction models before deciding to develop a new one Handle missing data using methods such as multiple imputation Develop and validate prediction models using established regression approaches Apply advanced regression and artificial intelligence methods for clinical prediction modelling Select models with real-world impact potential and translate them into practical decision tools Evaluate the impact of prediction model–based innovations using decision modelling and empirical studies Implement prediction model–based innovations in clinical practice and new health care settings

Elements of Airplane Performance

Elements of Airplane Performance provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles governing the flight performance of fixed-wing aircraft. After covering fundamental concepts related to atmospheric properties, equations of motion, aerodynamics, propeller and jet propulsion, electric powertrains, and flight instrumentation, the book guides its readers through the analysis of performance in steady and accelerated flight. Detailed chapters are dedicated to the most important flight phases: climb and descent (including gliding), cruise, take-off and landing, turning and maneuvering flight. Both point and path performance are covered, and the effect of aircraft design parameters, as well as operational parameters like weight, altitude, and local atmospheric conditions, are discussed. Appendices offer essential background in mechanics, coordinate systems and transformations, fluid dynamics, and a standard atmosphere model. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter.

Effective Thickness Method

In this video Martina Eliášová explains how the polymer interlayer between glass panes influences the performance of structural elements like floors and roofs. The key property is the interlayer's shear modulus, which is highly dependent on temperature and load duration. At high temperatures or under long-term loads, the shear modulus is low, and the glass panes behave more independently. At low temperatures or under short-term loads, the shear modulus is high, causing the panes to act as a single, monolithic unit. This variable behavior must be considered in design to accurately calculate stress and deflection. The video mentions that modern standards, like the effective thickness method in EN 16612, provide simplified analytical models to account for this partial shear interaction, leading to more economical and accurate designs than older, more conservative practices. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Martina Eliášová for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Amateur Craft as Method-in-the-Making:

This research output documents a pandemic-era experiment in which academic researchers used knitting to record and reflect on their digital screen time, exploring craft as a critical research method and a tool for data sensitisation, feminist activism, and embodied knowledge making. Project Overview: A group of academics and amateur knitters from Maastricht University and partner institutions met online during 2020–2021, using knitting to document their own screen time over a week of lockdown. Their creative outputs—a collection of individually knitted rectangles—were later assembled as a tactile "knitted book" to display in arts and crafts contexts, as well as academic contexts. The project linked technofeminist thinking, craftivism, and artistic research practices, aiming to make visible both quantitative and qualitative aspects of technology use during social isolation. Main Topics and Learning Objectives: • Explore how amateur craftwork (knitting) can act as a research method to sensitise and interpret personal data. • Engage with concepts from technofeminism and critical craft studies to understand the role of tactile, embodied methodologies. • Foster social connection, experimentation, and reflection on digital dependency during the COVID-19 lockdown. • Develop awareness of how materials, technique, and individual interpretation shape both method and outcome in collaborative research. Audience: This work suits students, educators, and researchers interested in qualitative and artistic research methods, feminist theory, science and technology studies (STS), and creative digital-literacy pedagogies. It models interdisciplinary practice and encourages engagement with data, methodology, and making as interconnected experiential processes. Authors and Licensing: Authors: Denise Petzold (first and corresponding author), Laura Barendregt, Ruth Benschop, Anna Harris, Laudy van den Heuvel, Bernike Pasveer, Veerle Spronck, Sally Wyatt, affiliated with Maastricht University, TU Delft, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, and HKU University of Arts Utrecht. Cast Glass

In this video, Telesilla Bristogianni and Faidra Oikonomopoulou explain the process and potential of glass casting as a method for creating three-dimensional architectural components. This technique allows for the creation of complex, solid glass shapes that fully utilize the material's high compressive strength. The process is divided into two main types based on the starting state of the glass. Primary casting involves founding glass from raw ingredients and includes methods like hot pouring. Secondary casting, or kiln casting, involves reheating pre-made solid glass pieces in a single kiln. A critical step is annealing, the controlled cooling to relieve internal stresses, a process that becomes lengthier for thicker pieces. The molds that are used are either disposable (for unique shapes, rough finish) or permanent (for series production, smooth finish). The main architectural limitation is the immense annealing time for large components, confining most applications to brick-sized units. However, topology optimization (reducing mass while maintaining stiffness) can drastically cut cooling times, enabling future large-scale, monolithic glass structures. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Telesilla Bristogianni and Faidra Oikonomopoulou for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. FiReGlass - Glass beams with defined fire resistance

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Maximilian Möckel, from TU Dresden, discusses fire resistent glass beams. In the construction industry, the application of load-bearing laminated safety glass (LSG), such as glass beams or glass columns, is of particular importance in terms of preventive structural fire protection. LSG with a transformation temperature of individual components of up to 550 °C conse-quently loses its load-bearing capacity. In co-operation between Hero Fire GmbH, Taupitz GmbH & Co. KG and the Institute of Building Construction of the TUD Dresden University of Technology, LSG-beams were developed for use as load-bearing elements with defined fire resistance. The newly developed FiReGlass beam compris-es a load-bearing LSG core, which is protected from the fire exposure by two protection systems. The glass surfaces and lower glass edges are protected by an all-round protection system compris-ing fire protection gel and sacrificial panes. This system is integrated into the support structure. These new developments enable the realization of comprehensive fire protection and defined fire resistance. For further details, please refer to the linked publication. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Maximilian Möckel for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection.
