Duur: circa 15 minuten.

3D Printed Glass Fabrication and Applications

In this video, Michael Stern, artist, engineer, scientist, designer, and co-inventor of molten glass 3D printing, traces glass fabrication from traditional blowing to additive manufacturing. He shares how he first encountered glass, what drew him to 3D printing, and how his parallel passions for mechanical engineering and glassblowing eventually converged into the invention of a new process. The 3D printing process involves a printer that works by heating a crucible of molten glass, which flows through a nozzle while a build plate moves layer by layer. The object is typically built over the course of 20 minutes to two hours, depending on its size. Rather than forcing the material, Stern emphasizes that working with glass requires listening to it, as it is a "loud material" with its own opinions. He advises those learning and working with glass to break challenges into small, unremarkable steps, given that innovation is simply the result of adding those steps together over time. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Michael Stern for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Introduction to Woodworking Machines

Introduction to Woodworking Machines is written to introduce basic woodworking machine safety and techniques to beginner woodworkers using an instructional woodshop. This guide is not a substitute for an in-person learning experience led by a competent instructor in the woodshop. While woodworking tools and machines present risk, accidents are avoided in shops where safety is a shared priority. A safety-conscious shop creates a culture of safety first through appropriate training, properly maintained tools and safety equipment, and a well-organized workspace.

ACA-bot

ACA-bot is an engaging chatbot designed for Automated Conversational Assessment (ACA). Drawing inspiration from traditional oral exams, this text-based conversational agent transforms assessment into a dynamic learning experience. It supports both formative and summative evaluation by offering students personalised feedback and guidance at every step of their learning journey. The first ACA-bot prototype focuses on assessing students’ understanding of basic statistical concepts, but its flexible design allows for easy adaptation to a wide range of subjects and learning contexts. Through interactive dialogue, students can practise explaining ideas clearly under exam-like conditions, apply their knowledge to new and challenging questions, and refine their reasoning as they respond to follow-up prompts. They gain valuable insights into their own understanding, identify areas for improvement, and gradually build confidence for both oral and written assessments. For educators, ACA-bot offers a powerful way to scale oral examinations and enhance formative assessment without increasing workload. It automates parts of the assessment process, provides structured and actionable insights into student performance, and opens the door to more personal, interactive feedback at scale. By combining the strengths of conversational AI and educational assessment, ACA-bot turns evaluation into a collaborative, insightful process. It empowers students to think aloud, reason more effectively, and grow, while giving educators a smarter, more innovative way to understand and support learning.

The Medieval Podcast | The Art of War in Byzantium with Georgios Theotokis

From the social media buzz we saw a couple of years ago, it seems a lot of people spend a lot of time thinking about the ancient Roman Empire and its military activities, but less time thinking about how it evolved into the Middle Ages. With the heart of the empire now in the city of Byzantium, how did the military face new challenges while holding onto its legacy? This week, Daniele speaks with Georgios Theotokis about the military culture of the Byzantine Empire, how people learned strategy and tactics, and how the Roman military machine changed over time. This podcast is made possible by the generous support of listeners like you! To find out how to help spread the joy of medieval history, please visit patreon.com/themedievalpodcast

Scholingstraject AI-geletterdheid (UBVU)

Virtual sea-going marine science fieldwork with VirtualShip

Marine science relies heavily on fieldwork at and in the ocean for data collection. Consequently, marine science students need training in sea-going fieldwork. However, such training is expensive, logistically demanding, and environmentally burdensome because research vessels emit substantial amounts of CO₂. To provide students with an opportunity to experience the realities of working at sea, we developed a platform for virtual oceanic fieldwork: the VirtualShip Classroom, which provides Python code, exercises, and 360 videos as virtual reality (VR) covering different aspects of fieldwork such as expedition planning, sampling, and data analysis. Whenever possible, students work with authentic tools and realistic datasets, such as the Marine Facilities Planning platform for designing research expeditions. Basic programming skills are advantageous, particularly when students analyze self-collected data. Students formulate their own research question in a region of the global ocean of their choice. They then investigate this question with a virtual research vessel operated through the bespoke VirtualShip software. Instruments currently implemented for deployment or onboard use are ADCP, CTD, XBT, Argo floats, surface drifters, and underway temperature and salinity sensors. This collection of teaching materials is accompanied by a suggested workflow, which outlines a series of classes on virtual ocean research.

Code of conduct for your VirtualShip group

This code of conduct can be used in VirtualShip to make students think about collaboration within their group and how to distribute their grade. Note that the Code of Conduct applies to the actual collaboration within your group in the VirtualShip Assignment; so is not about how you would work on the ship.
