Sharpening Your Senses

What do doctors, biologists, business experts, museum and art specialists have in common? They are expert observers. Their work involves attuning and developing their skills of observation, sharpening their senses. This interdisciplinary elective attends to training this core skill, a skill that is central to these fields and yet which often gets taken for granted and not given specific attention. Training the senses means understanding sensory knowledge and its historical and cultural context more broadly. How have the senses been perceived historically in society? How do they impact on current socio-cultural codes and professional practices? What does it do to bring domains such as medicine, art, museum studies, globalization studies, marketing and law together, and examine the intersections and cross-overs at the borders? How can students improve their sensory abilities of noticing and apply it in their future practice? This cross-Faculty elective, a collaboration with Marres House for Contemporary Culture, is designed to precisely address these questions, by bringing medical students and arts students together. In this course students will be trained to become more aware of embodied knowledge’ and practice and train their sensory skills. They will also be introduced to the theories behind ‘senses-based learning’, the socio-historical context that drives our current use of the senses in various professional fields. For that, students are encouraged to step out into conscious observation and use different kinds of senses from different perspectives. Students will learn from each other, as well as the tutors and invited experts they listen to and observe. This elective aims to help students engage critically with how to train their senses to experience/ perceive more fully and collect information relevant to their fields, with how to describe and communicate this information clearly and precisely, and understand how to analyse it using various disciplinary protocols.

The Origins of Structural Gass design

In this video, Tim Macfarlane, a structural engineer in London, traces structural glass from its hesitant beginnings in 1989 to its role in contemporary architecture. Glass is unique not because it is new, but because of its magical simplicity: a thin sheet that keeps weather out while connecting inside to outside. Through constant innovation, glass has undergone numerous processes such as lamination, toughening, or coatings that, while improving performance, also reduce reusability and raise environmental questions about whether large, complex glass is truly sensible. Early projects with architects Eva Jiřičná and Rick Mather forced Tim to question fundamental issues the industry had not addressed: how strong glass really is, how to calculate it, and how to make it safe, information once treated as private intellectual property. His role became one of moral integrity, negotiating between market pressures and client ambitions. Tim advises young engineers to keep an open mind, love life, and have fun with curiosity. True intelligence comes from within, not from AI. The journey of asking questions and fulfilling yourself as a human being is what matters. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Tim Macfarlane for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Air pollution in Jakarta

In the recent years Jakarta has infamously reached the top 10 of most polluted cities in the world. Due to an increase in population, climate change, modernization and industrialization of Indonesia and Jakarta. The main sources of its pollution are vehicle emissions, heavy industry, burning of organic matter, construction and dust, and its citizens now have carry the burden. After large increases in disease, deaths and economic costs the cities regulators have finally accepted that measurements have to be taken and, together with NGO’s, taken action in the form of measurements and a roadmap to 2030. In the plan, vast infrastructural projects are proposed to improve connectivity in the city and encourage the use of public transport. Furthermore, plans to implement and enforce emission standards and regulations for private vehicles and heavy industry are proposed. Finally, they plan to handle Jakartas large waste crisis in the suburbs and informal housing, which is currently mostly burned, as citizens see no other way to dispose of it. The regulators plans are ambitious, and will certainly improve the standard of living for the whole city after completion. However, during its implementation it will have vast consequences for thousands of citizens as these infrastructure projects will require the demolition of thousands of houses. If new regulations and policies are too restrictive it can harm the lower-class citizens and economic growth. A final problem is finance, the plans are not only ambitious, they are also incredibly expensive. It will require the cooperation of the private and public sector, as well the intergovernmental cooperation between different branches to ensure these plans can be successful. Fortunately, the air quality is easy to measure, as the stations used in previous air quality monitoring studies, together with the enforcement of emission standards can be used to monitor how the air quality will increase as each phase of the plan is implemented. A careful balance and timeline has to be crafted to implement new regulations and infrastructure projects, but in the end, the citizens will reap the benefit.

The Matter of Hospitals

This book invites readers to discover never-before-told stories of hospitals through an unusual assortment of materials, offering a unique and timely glimpse into one of society’s most feared, essential, and sensorially rich institutions. Hospitals, with their distinctive smells, acute pain, births, writhing bodies, incessant beeping, endless waiting, cardboard food and never-ending corridors, have fascinated writers for centuries. Edited by the prize-winning author of A Sensory Education and Making Sense of Medicine, this book shares a never-before-told story of hospitals through an unusual collection of objects. A great deal that matters happens in hospitals – from new life to the end of life. There is also a great deal of matter, in its material form, within hospitals. Sometimes there is too much: when we see the mountains of clinical waste with dirty syringes and used gloves. Sometimes there is too little: when we saw empty pharmacy shelves during the pandemic. More often, matter circulates in ways that are taken for granted, invisible yet critical to how hospitals function. Each essay in this book takes the matter of hospitals as a starting point to explore broader themes. Organised alphabetically, The Matter of Hospitals investigates what we can learn from the institution’s materiality about creativity, waste, patient care, community, attention and design. From ‘A’ for atmosphere to ‘Z’ for zips, each essay is a close sensory study of what seem, on the surface, to be mundane things. Beautifully illustrated with artistic photographs and hand-drawn illustrations by the editor, The Matter of Hospitals offers an inspiring and unique examination of the stuff that so many of us take for granted, in a place that we never do.

ICF in Person-centred Rehabilitation

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is a linking framework for interprofessional collaboration and structuring the needs of a client. The person's functioning is the starting point for person- and goal-oriented iterative rehabilitation, for which ICF applications are needed. This material aims to support the use of the ICF in person-centred rehabilitation and interprofessional practice by offering ICF tools. It is based on the MAGPIED rehabilitation process: Meet, Assess, Goal set, Plan, Implement, Evaluate, and Document. Even though the material follows the rehabilitation model, it can be used by any professionals who uses the ICF. The idea of the material is to offer a short theoretical background, examples, and tools as well as examples of assignments for the reader. It can be used by any professionals as an inspiring package of ICF tools or supporting material when educating the usage of ICF in higher education institutions. For the lectures, the material includes a supplement PowerPoint presentation for the Assess and Plan phases.

Maker Lab complete set of JupyterPython-materials zip file

This a zip file of all the course's Jupyter Notebook documents, bundled together here for the convenience of anyone wanting to use them within Jupyter Notebook*. The Maker Lab course uses Jupyter Notebook documents in several ways: for Readings for Students (specifically the "lecture notes") and for Assignments (both descriptions and templates). These individual files are found in the relevant pages here on Edusources - and also shared in PDF form so that they can be viewed without using Jupyter Notebooks. However, in order to interact with and fully utilize the Jupyter Notebook documents (including their hyperlinks and pointers to data and image files), it is best to save the entire collection locally in a way that preserves the original directory structure. This is easiest to accomplish by downloading all files at once via this JupyterPython-materials zip file and unpacking it (extracting the files) to your preferred local directory. *Note: there is a text file within this zip file with instructions for installing Python and Jupyter Notebook.
