The Index of Medieval Art

The Index of Medieval Art houses, contextualizes, and presents images and information relating to the iconographic traditions of the medieval world. Founded in 1917 and maintained by a specialized staff of art historians, it serves iconographic researchers through both its physical archive on the Princeton University campus and an expanding online database. Its ongoing program of conferences and publications provides opportunities for continuing scholarly and public discourse about the visual culture of the Middle Ages. Once a subscription service, the online database has been freely available to the public since 2023. Online holdings comprise 177, 306 (to date) online records of works of art from early apostolic times to ca. 1600. While western European and Byzantine Christian art remain most heavily represented, secular, Jewish, and Islamic art is also being added.

Open Education menu

We created a ready-to-use menu with 17 different Open Education practices to be implemented in your education. With each practice turned into its own dish and recipe, you can easily see how the practice can be implemented, with its difficulty level and examples. The goal is to provide you with ideas and examples on how to implement Open Science practices into your education. Or use the menu as a starting point for conversations about open educational practices with colleagues! Already an expert? The menu can also be used for a 1-hour workshop on Open Educational practices for others interested in Open Science. Let the participants select a dish from the menu they are interested in, and help them to adapt the dish so they can turn their own ideas into real practices.

Systems Thinking Pressure Cooker

What – This pressure cooker is an introduction to systems thinking. This pressure cooker can be used to quickly familiarize a group of people with what the characteristics of a system are and have them experience various examples of using systems thinking to explore a topic or question. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a team of teachers that are not yet familiar with systems thinking, as well as a group of students (all levels; any group size). Why – Guided training in integration of systems thinking in a research project. How long – Approximately 2-2,5 hours in class and a 10 minutes pre-class video.

Algorithmic assessment systems

This class pursues a twofold goal of making students both think about the use of AI in recidivism prediction/social benefits allocation and reflect on the possible use of AI for making evaluative, moral judgments. To do so, students are first presented with contextual information about recidivism prediction and social benefits allocation controversies before the class through mandatory reading. During the class, students are divided into four groups that take contrasting positions on these two issues (recidivism prediction and social benefits allocation) and are asked to suggest (counter-)arguments for the position that they have been assigned in a debate-style manner, following academic argumentative norms. Later, students use ChatGPT/GPT3 or an alternative LLM with a chat interface to prompt it about arguments and counter-arguments pertaining to their position. As a result, students compare and discuss the answers they have come up with and those offered by ChatGPT, both within the groups and with the whole class, exploring different dimensions of using AI for evaluative moral judgments

Collage-making for self-discovery in engineering ethics

This creative exercise enables students to discover, reflect and express their emotions in relation to engineering. In this way, the exercise enables self-understanding through an encounter with one’s own feelings and intuitions and serves as a starting point for better ethical deliberation and well-being. Learning goals: • Expanding moral sensibility (being aware of their own emotions, values and norms) • Stimulating moral creativity and imagination

Faces of Open Science workshop

Drawing on Utrecht University's Faces of Open Science project, we’ve developed a set of ready-to-use educational activities that invite participants to explore the rich diversity of perspectives within the open science movement. These engaging, interactive materials help learners reflect on their own views, values, and roles in shaping open science—making abstract principles tangible, personal, and actionable. The materials can be used in full as a 4-hour workshop or can be split up in separate activities that take between 30 and 60 minutes. Activities are all developed to promote interaction between participants, for example by storytelling, crafting, or debating.
