Doing the literature review: Scoping search

Scoping search A scoping search is a search technique you can use as a first step in your literature review: its main objective is to rapidly and efficiently determine the scale of a predefined topic. Creating an overview of keywords used When you do a scoping search it can be hard to extract the keywords attached to records in the search result. To get an overview of those keywords, you can use a visualization tool like VOSviewer. There are more tools like this one, but for this module we focus on VOSviewer. Example of an author keyword map. Activity: Creating a keyword map with VOSviewer. Related.

Teacher’s Handbook for the Academic Reading and Writing module

This handbook offers an overview of the Academic Reading and Writing module taught by the Academic Language Centre of Leiden University. This course has been offered in various forms to first-year students of BA International Studies, BA Urban Studies and other programmes since 2012. The aim of this handbook is to provide a framework for tutors outside the Academic Language Centre who wish to teach the module in its current format, and/or to serve as a basis for those who wish adapt the module to fit the needs of their specific programme. The overall goal is to enable departments and programmes to incorporate academic reading and writing skills into their curricula, using tried and tested materials developed by specialists.

Unit 3: Introducing the case studies, citation using CMS, paragraph structure

Videos: Video 5: what needs to be cited Video 6: How to cite sources Video 7: Using paragraphs Homework task(s): Write a draft of Assignment 2: Critical Reflection Suggested tasks for the tutorial: Tutor introduces the case studies and asks students to choose their case study Exercise on what (not) to cite Using the list below, discuss which examples would need to be cited and which constitute general knowledge: • The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a country located in central Africa formerly known as Zaire. • The Congo was once under Belgian rule. The Belgian Congo achieved independence on 30 June 1960. • Army Chief of Staff Joseph-Désiré Mobutu officially came to power on 25th November 1965, by means of coup d'état. Scholars often refer to Mobutu's rise to power as an example of a Cold War cult of personality. • A coup d’état is the sudden, violent overthrow of an existing government by a small group. Discussion questions on paragraphs • What is a paragraph? • How many topics should you cover in one paragraph? • What structure should a paragraph have? Exercise to practise CMS citation (Notes & Bibliography style): • Work with a partner to create CMS citation(s) for [introductory text] in CMS Notes and Bibliography style. • Create a note, a shortened note and a reference list entry. • Implement these citations in your critical reflection draft. Peer review of Critical Reflection (Assignment 2) drafts Swap drafts with a partner. Read your partner's draft and make notes on the following points: a. Has your partner provided a summary and a critical assessment of the text? b. Is the draft structured in paragraphs? Does each paragraph represent one topic? c. How does your partner bring in the source text (quotes, paraphrases)? Write feedback for your partner.

EduSpec: a platform to interprete IR/MS/NMR spectra

EduSpec provides a platform for you to learn and practice the interpretation of infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectra. In short, eduSpec is an application that aims to help students learn how to interpret spectra that originate from infrared (IR) and NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry (MS); three advanced techniques that are widely used in chemical laboratories. The focus in this application is phenomenological: what do the peaks in the spectra tell us? For now, you will not find much background on the inner workings of the spectroscopic techniques; this knowledge is assumed to have been provided to the students via lectures or other didactical means of choice. eduSpec is developed at the Science Faculty of Radboud University, Nijmegen, The Netherlands by the eduSpec team. All content used to create eduSpec is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. EduSpec is powered by Radboud University and Stitpro. MORE BACKGROUND At Radboud University’s Faculty of Science, and more specifically in the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM) many forms of spectroscopy are very important tools that are used extensively for both routine and less conventional analyses. A number of groups actively develop new spectroscopic hardware and methodology. Not surprisingly, learning students about spectroscopy is an important part of the programme in the Education Institute for Molecular Sciences (EIMS) that has a strong connection to the IMM. The first course in which students learn about spectroscopy mostly has a practical character and specifically aims at learning students the basics of how to interpret infrared, NMR and mass spectra. For years, a programme called ‘iSpec4, An Introduction to Spectroscopy’ was used to let students train with recognizing specific spectral features. Although the contents of the programme were quite satisfactory, the application itself became more and more outdated in terms of graphics and – worse – in its ability to run in newer operating systems. With the advent of 64 bit processors and operating systems, the application simply did not run anymore. After due consideration, we decided to develop our own application ‘eduSpec’ for spectroscopy tutoring. eduSpec had to be robust, extendable, open source and web-based to make it as accessible as possible to both users, educators and developers from around the world. To achieve this, Drupal, an open source CMS was chosen as the platform on which eduSpec is built. A number of freely available Drupal Modules as well as some adapted or newly developed modules provide the necessary functionality for building an e-learning system to our (and hopefully your) liking. For displaying spectra, molecular structures and for drawing the latter, the open source JSmol applet has been integrated into a Drupal Module called ‘Molecule’. Settlement of International Disputes

This is a syllabus for the course "Settlement of International Disputes" designed for the Faculty of Law (LLM Public International Law), University of Groningen. This course aims at providing students an in-depth understanding of dispute settlement methods and procedures in international law. More specifically, the course’s learning objectives are: To obtain general knowledge of the various mechanisms for peaceful settlement of disputes in international law; To be aware of the role and limitations of mechanisms for peaceful dispute settlement in international law; To gain detailed knowledge of a number of specific dispute settlement procedures, in particular, the International Court of Justice; To improve the ability to critically reflect on the interaction between the various mechanisms in the overall context of international law. The course is taught through online lectures focusing on the main features of dispute settlement (procedures) and working sessions aiming at discussing specific procedural and jurisdictional issues based on case law.

Fragmentarium

Fragmentarium’s primary objective is to develop a digital library specialized for medieval manuscript fragment research. Although based on the many years of experience of e-codices — Virtual Manuscript Library of Switzerland, the Fragmentarium Digital Library has an international orientation. First and foremost it is conceived as a social platform for libraries, scholars and students to do scholarly work on fragments. It conforms to the latest standards set by digital libraries and will set new standards, especially in the area of interoperability. The web application contains a series of tools: A cataloging tool that enables libraries, collectors, researchers and students to gather and describe fragments via a CMS. A tool for curated and social tags, facets and keywords, allowing efficient research through comparison and cross-checking. A tool to link and assemble fragments offers the possibility to arrange cuttings, fragments of leaves, and individual leaves in any order.
