ShareXR : Challenge-Based Learning with XR (BMS Lab, University of Twente)

ShareXR introduces a challenge-based learning (CBL) approach for integrating research, design, and development in engineering education through extended reality (XR). Developed at the University of Twente’s BMS Lab, the model addresses the increasing need for multidisciplinary collaboration by teaching students to speak a shared language across research, design, and technical development. Even for those without an engineering, scientific or STEM background. This course offers a hands-on, multidisciplinary learning experience where students take real research ideas and transform them into innovation projects within a complete and validated open learning XR ecosystem. With reusable multimedia course content, the course enables students to understand interdisciplinary collaboration, while each module focuses on one of the four pillars: Research, Design, Development, and Project Management — guided by principles of balance, iteration, and collaboration. By working with different tools like one-page project canvases, students will learn how to translate research ideas into structured user stories, requirements, and project management tasks, while exploring how XR tools can act as a human-centered medium for prototyping, testing, and validating ideas without requiring coding skills.

Self-study module Introduction to Plant Biology - Plant hormones

This self-study module is part of the series ‘Introduction to Plant Biology’ and introduces plant hormones, explaining how chemical signaling enables communication and coordination within plants. It is designed for students learning basic plant biology and for teachers seeking clear figures and explanations for educational use. The module covers fundamental concepts of cell signaling and signal transduction and examines the functions and interactions of major plant hormones, including auxin, cytokinin, abscisic acid, gibberellins, ethylene, salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, brassinosteroids, and strigolactones, in regulating plant growth, development, and responses to the environment.

Adhesive Connections in Glass Constructions

In this video, Christiane Kothe explains the use of structural adhesive bonding in glass construction, a technology with ancient roots that was revolutionized by modern synthetic and silicone adhesives. Adhesive connections offer key advantages over mechanical fixings, including transparent aesthetics, the ability to join different materials, and even stress distribution, which reduces local weak points. However, their success depends on meticulous surface preparation and managing long curing times, which can impact production efficiency. The video covers the fundamental principles of adhesion and cohesion, the chemical curing process of structural adhesives, and the critical importance of surface pre-treatments to ensure bond strength and long-term durability. Through methods like contact angle measurement and mechanical testing, including accelerated aging, the performance and reliability of these bonds can be validated. When applied correctly, adhesive connections significantly enhance the safety, efficiency, and design possibilities of modern glass structures. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Christiane Kothe for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Sharpening Your Senses

What do doctors, biologists, business experts, museum and art specialists have in common? They are expert observers. Their work involves attuning and developing their skills of observation, sharpening their senses. This interdisciplinary elective attends to training this core skill, a skill that is central to these fields and yet which often gets taken for granted and not given specific attention. Training the senses means understanding sensory knowledge and its historical and cultural context more broadly. How have the senses been perceived historically in society? How do they impact on current socio-cultural codes and professional practices? What does it do to bring domains such as medicine, art, museum studies, globalization studies, marketing and law together, and examine the intersections and cross-overs at the borders? How can students improve their sensory abilities of noticing and apply it in their future practice? This cross-Faculty elective, a collaboration with Marres House for Contemporary Culture, is designed to precisely address these questions, by bringing medical students and arts students together. In this course students will be trained to become more aware of embodied knowledge’ and practice and train their sensory skills. They will also be introduced to the theories behind ‘senses-based learning’, the socio-historical context that drives our current use of the senses in various professional fields. For that, students are encouraged to step out into conscious observation and use different kinds of senses from different perspectives. Students will learn from each other, as well as the tutors and invited experts they listen to and observe. This elective aims to help students engage critically with how to train their senses to experience/ perceive more fully and collect information relevant to their fields, with how to describe and communicate this information clearly and precisely, and understand how to analyse it using various disciplinary protocols.
