Float Glass: Primary Glass Manufactoring and Mechanical Properties

In this video Mauro Overend explains the well-known properties of glass and how they result from its manufacturing process. Glass is an optically transparent but brittle material, making it ideal for architecture yet prone to sudden breakage. The video focuses on the industrial float glass process, invented by Alastair Pilkington in the 1950s. This process involves melting raw materials like silica sand, soda, and lime at 1500°C. The molten glass is then floated on a bath of molten tin, where it cools and solidifies into a flat uniform sheet. This rapid, controlled cooling results in an "amorphous isotropic solid," which gives glass its transparency, perfect elasticity, and brittleness. The glass is then annealed (gradually cooled) to minimize internal stresses, making it possible to cut. The final product, known as annealed float glass, is the base material for most architectural applications. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Mauro Overend for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. VR environment for the course "Lieux de Mémoire"

This is a 3D model of Troy, produced for the course "Lieux de Mémoire. Space, Story and the Construction of Memory". The model was created by the 4D Research Lab of the University of Amsterdam for the project 'Virtual Past Places' in collaboration with course teacher Gert Jan van Wijngaarden. This model contains three scenes based on excavations in Troy, each with a new added phase of reconstruction: the first being the archaeological area, the second the architectural reconstruction and the third being the addition of myths and stories to these finds. A fictional central area forms the fourth scene, with the purpose of giving entry to the other scenes. This model is accessible as a VR room using Hubs Cloud software (virtualplaces-uva.eu). For reproducability and reuse, consult the manual at https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.30490373 and follow the instructions to set up your own Hubs Cloud instance. For the relevant dataset, please use the link to the Zenodo deposition. Funding and context Virtual Past Places has been made possible by a grant, the 'Stimuleringsregeling Online Onderwijs' from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap, OCW), coordinated by SURF, the cooperative association of Dutch educational and research institutions. Virtual Past Places includes open access publication of all developed teaching materials as Open Educational Resources, the development of training materials, and the organisation of inspiration and counselling sessions for peers. In case you're interested in the results of this research project, and/or participate in it, please contact J.Waagen@uva.nl.

FiReGlass - Glass beams with defined fire resistance

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Maximilian Möckel, from TU Dresden, discusses fire resistent glass beams. In the construction industry, the application of load-bearing laminated safety glass (LSG), such as glass beams or glass columns, is of particular importance in terms of preventive structural fire protection. LSG with a transformation temperature of individual components of up to 550 °C conse-quently loses its load-bearing capacity. In co-operation between Hero Fire GmbH, Taupitz GmbH & Co. KG and the Institute of Building Construction of the TUD Dresden University of Technology, LSG-beams were developed for use as load-bearing elements with defined fire resistance. The newly developed FiReGlass beam compris-es a load-bearing LSG core, which is protected from the fire exposure by two protection systems. The glass surfaces and lower glass edges are protected by an all-round protection system compris-ing fire protection gel and sacrificial panes. This system is integrated into the support structure. These new developments enable the realization of comprehensive fire protection and defined fire resistance. For further details, please refer to the linked publication. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Maximilian Möckel for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Digital replicas of clay tablets from the VU special collections

This collection consists of 16 digitized clay tablets from the VU special collections, as well as some other 3D printed objects that were created over the last few years. The clay tablets have been 3D scanned for you to use in education, both digitally and physically. Every publication below includes: A picture of the clay tablet. A 3D model that can be used digitally and can be 3D printed. Technical instructions for 3D printing the model. Information on the original clay tablet and a link to the original object in the VU image base. Some of the digitized clay tablets are linked to a lesson plan on how to use them in higher and secondary education. If this is the case, the publication of that digitized clay tablet will include a link to that lesson plan. Moreover, the links underneath lead you to an information page on the possibilities for 3D printing at the VU, the VU image base, in which the original clay tablets are metadated and a practical outreach about the 3D scanning process.

Object Based Teaching and Learning

Library collections don't just consist of (online) articles and books. At the University Library of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, we possess a wealth of special collections, from academic heritage to maps and globes. The objects from these collections are used in teaching and research. Through technology, such as 3D scanning and printing, we can present these objects even more vividly to education. For example, students will be able to pass replicas of ancient clay tablets through their hands. In addition, at the VU, numerous other models have been 3D printed and used in educational contexts in recent years. This publication encompasses a selection of the clay tablets of the VU special collections that were digitized as part of the project Digital Impressions, as well as other 3D printed objects, and a collection of educational resources for teaching with objects. Click on one of the two publications in this set to access the resources that you are looking for. Moreover, the link underneath presents you with more information on the Digital Impressions project on the VU website.
