Mind Measuring Mind

Mind Measuring Mind explores the foundations of psychological methodology, ethical research practice, and the pivotal role of measurement in understanding behaviour and mental processes. Blending teaching material, scholarly context, and personal perspective, it opens a dialogue about the challenges and responsibilities of doing science when the subject and the scientist share the same mind. Why is psychological science different from other sciences? Psychology is the study of behaviour and mental processes. Unlike most other fields, psychologists use their own mental processes to examine those of others. This self-referential nature, “mind measuring mind,” brings unique challenges for psychological measurement and the interpretation of research results. This book critically examines psychology as a science, exploring the empirical cycle and the teaching of methodology and statistics. In most academic psychology programmes, students are expected to participate as subjects in psychological studies. To support this, a series of PBL tutorials was developed to familiarise students with the empirical cycle and encourage discussion of validity, research methods, ethical standards, scientific communication, and potential threats to responsible, high-quality research. The materials in this book are based on those tutorials. This open textbook is designed for first- and second-year BSc Psychology students at Maastricht University, particularly those navigating the renewed curriculum’s emphasis on ‘Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking’ (SICT). It serves as a flexible guide for students following individual learning paths, including participation in faculty-led research experiments, reflection on the empirical cycle, and connecting practical experiences to theoretical concepts such as methodology, statistics, validity, ethics, and scientific communication. Ideal for self-study, group PBL sessions, and research practicums, the book helps bridge hands-on research involvement with classroom discussions, supporting competency development in psychological research.

The Politics of Theatre, pt. 2 with Dirk Visser | In a Nutshell

How was the AIDS epidemic translated into theatre plays? Why is the way we talk about illness important? And what does Susan Sontag have to do with all of that In this episode of In a Nutshell, Antonia and guest Dirk Visser take a look at the way theatre can – and has – tackled heavy topics like AIDS. And why it matters how a story is being told. Dirk Visser has conducted his PhD at the Faculty of Arts research investigates the theatrical response to the AIDS crisis in Britain and America, focusing particularly on those plays that did not enter the canon of English or American drama. His intend is thereby to restore those plays as part within the cultural memory of the AIDS epidemic. This episode is part of a two-part series on politics and theatre. Also tune in for the first episode, which explores the topic of political theatre in general. Edit: Jara Majerus Cover: Antonia Leise

De Reflector – Beyond Elemental Loss | Radboud Reflects Lecture by philosopher Marjolein Oele

How can the classical elements—fire, water, air, and earth—help us grapple with loss in an era of climate change? In her latest book Beyond Elemental Loss, philosopher Marjolein Oele observes how shifting elements, such as unusual weather, polluted air and sudden wildfires, can leave us feeling disoriented. Drawing on indigenous knowledge, as well as great thinkers such as Elinor Ostrom and Michael Serres, she makes a case for trust-building as a path forward. Yet, in an age of historically low trust in politics, how can trust offer a solution? Listen to this conversation between philosopher Cees Leijenhorst and environmental philosopher Marjolein Oele about her latest book, covering how we can view loss during a climate crisis through the elements, the importance of communities, and whether she is optimistic about the future. About the speaker Marjolein Oele is professor of Philosophy of the Humanities at Radboud University. She is the author of Beyond Elemental Loss: Shifting Constellations of Water, Fire, Air and Earth and E-Co-Affectivity: Exploring Pathos at Life's Material Interfaces. Her most recent research project focuses on ‘affects’ in the Anthropocene. Did you find this interesting? Subscribe to the channel on which you listened to De Reflector. The Medieval Podcast | The Medieval Order of Assassins with Steve Tibble

In the last twenty years, the shadowy Assassins of the medieval Middle East have seen a serious resurgence in popularity. And yet, like so many medieval people and groups, it's still hard to tell the legend from the reality - and that's just the way the Assassins wanted it. This week, Danièle speaks with Steve Tibble about who the Assassins were, what tactics they used in the Middle Ages, and what this legendary order stood for.
