Philosophical Tools for Climate Change

This textbook was created as an open educational resource in the course Philosophy beyond Academia at the University of Groningen in 2024. Except for this introduction, all of the chapters have been created by students of the MA Philosophy Programme of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Groningen. This book is the second book in a series of open educational resources applying philosophical tools and methods to a particular topic. In the past, philosophical tools and methods were applied to the topic of migration in the open educational resource, Migration: A Philosophical Toolkit (https://edusources.nl/materials/c06574c0-d831-4c52-82a9-a85b8d3d43e5/migration). About the book: In this book, the methodological approach to the topic of climate change focuses on the notion of a philosophical tool or method. A philosophical tool is a particular philosophical concept or distinction; a philosophical method is a more general way of thinking about a problem that gives us new insights about the problem, in our case, climate change. What this book attempts to do is apply a number of these tools and methods to the problem of climate change.

START Handbook

This open online textbook is one of the results of the Erasmus+ project START (https://supportingstart.eu/), which aims to support teachers who help students transition from high school to higher education. The goal of the handbook is to provide those who teach first-year undergraduate students with strategies and resources to facilitate their students’ transition to higher education. The handbook contains ideas and concrete activities for academics to see how they can help first-year students engage, persist and succeed in higher education. Each chapter represents one of 17 identified challenges teachers experience when working with first-year undergraduate students. The handbook contributors, representing 6 partner institutions, looked into what has worked for them and other academics in relation to the challenges and identified a wide range of resources and pedagogical strategies that could be of help to teachers. Three types of content are proposed: in-depth content, easy-to-use resources and global pedagogical strategy. The handbook can be used primarily by academics who teach first-year students. However, it can also help those facilitating professional development at higher education institutions, since research-based ideas will be contextualised for different disciplines and expressed in language clear to those not trained as educators.

Beyond the Map

This book was created as a result of the seminar Voorbij de Kaart: Beschrijvingen van de buiten-Europese wereld in Joan Blaeu’s Grooten Atlas [= Beyond the Map: Descriptions of the non-European World in Joan Blaeu’s Atlas Maior] which was lectured at the University of Groningen in the academic year 2023/24. During the seminar the students critically analysed the texts of non-European regions in the renowned Atlas by Blaeu. About their findings they also wrote short contributions, intended for a broader audience. These student contributions were used for a digital exhibition, hosted by the Special Collections department of the University of Groningen Library, and re-used here in this format as an open textbook. The book is available in Dutch and English About the book: Publisher Joan Blaeu (1599-1673) – following the example of other publishers of cartographic work – also provided his renowned Atlas with extensive accompanying texts. The Dutch-language edition of Atlas Maior, the Grooten Atlas, has nearly 4,000 pages of text. The texts of 20 selected non-European regions have been subjected to careful analysis by History students of the University of Groningen and presented in a beautiful digital exhibition.
