Rethink the City: New Approaches to Global and Local Urban Challenges

Learn about today's urban challenges focusing on developing countries, referred to as the Global South. We will debate the benefits associated with three different themes, going beyond traditional urban strategies and policies: Spatial justice - Having fair, inclusive and healthy urban contexts is one of the greatest challenges of cities in emerging economies. Housing Provision and Management - Increasing demand in the Global South calls for alternative approaches in housing provision and management. Sustainable Urban Transitions - In order to transition from our current (unsustainable) system towards a fair and sustainable future we need to pay attention to the social, economic, and cultural context. In the course, we will address questions such as: Is the 'just city' framework applicable to cities with extreme socio-economic inequality? Can community-led housing initiatives provide effective solutions for households in need? How can the transition towards an environmentally sustainable future also be socially just? In this architecture and urban planning course, academic urban planning expertise from TU Delft is used to formulate possible answers to these questions, and is applied in a range of challenging case studies from Latin America, MENA region, Sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia, , among others. This course offers you a new perspective to understand and analyse the urban challenges of the Global South. Through a combination of short theoretical lessons, presentation of case studies, testimonies from practitioners and practical assignments you will also learn how to develop a critical perspective about your own urban environment and how to translate this knowledge into analytical tools and innovative urban solutions.

Co-creation of Sustainable Cities

This set contains a series of 6 short (<15 min web lectures on ' Co-creation of Sustainable Cities' (see https://online-learning.tudelft.nl/courses/citizens-co-creating-sustainable-cities/) Around the world, major challenges of our time such as population growth and climate change are being addressed in cities. Here, citizens play an important role together with governments, companies, NGOs and researchers in creating social, technological and political innovations for achieving sustainability and resilience. Citizens can be co-creators of sustainable cities when they can engage in city politics or in the design of the urban environment and its technologies and infrastructure. In addition, citizens influence and are influenced by the technologies and systems that they use every day. Sustainability is thus a result of the interplay between technology, policy and people’s daily lives. Understanding this interplay is essential for creating sustainable cities. This set provides an overview of the dynamics of co-creation for sustainable cities worldwide. In different contexts, different forms of co-creation are preferred in specific urban systems. These materials will provide you with an understanding needed to investigate how water, waste, energy, air, food, mobility, and green spaces have a vast effect on city life. Additionally, the videos will teach you about the dynamics of co-creation and the key principles of citizens interacting with service providing companies, technology and infrastructure developers, policy makers and researchers. You will gain an understanding of major types of co-creation and their interdependence with their socio-technical and political contexts. You will become equipped to indicate how you can use co-creation to develop innovative technologies, policy arrangements or social practices for a sustainable city in your own community. You will demonstrate this by developing an action plan, research proposal or project idea. Basic knowledge of sustainability in urban settings, urban environmental technology and urban management is assumed. These materials relate to the collection "Governance and Institutional Arrangements of Complex STE Systems."

Course Agent Based Modeling

Understanding Complex Adaptive Systems requires tools that themselves are complex to create and understand. Shalizi defines Agent Based Modelling as “An agent is a persistent thing which has some state we find worth representing, and which interacts with other agents, mutually modifying each other’s states. The components of an agent-based model are a collection of agents and their states, the rules governing the interactions of the agents and the environment within which they live.” This course contains 12 chapters. Firstly, an introduction to Complexity and to Agent based modelling is given (chapter 1 and 2). In the next chapters, complex system properties are explained in more detail (chapter 3-7 :Emergence, Path dependence, Adaptiveness, Chaos and instability, Diversity and Self-similarity). Subsequently, in chapter 8, an introduction is given of Robustness and Resilience. Lastly, in chapter 9-12, four other concepts are explained to understand the agent based modelling of complex adaptive systems: Evolution, Network theory and observer dependence. The course can be found on the following link: https://ocw.tudelft.nl/courses/agent-based-modeling-of-complex-adaptive-systems-basic/ This publication also includes various examples (selected research articles) of the use of ABM when it comes to understanding and analyzing resilience. A course summary is also part of the resources. This course relates to the collection "Measuring and Analyzing Resilience of STE Systems."

Sustainable Urban Development

Did you know that cities take up less than 3% of the earth’s land surface, but more than 50% of the world’s population live in them? And, cities generate more than 70% of the global emissions? Large cities and their hinterlands (jointly called metropolitan regions) greatly contribute to global urbanization and sustainability challenges, yet are also key to resolving these same challenges. If you are interested in the challenges of the 21st century metropolitan regions and how these can be solved from within the city and by its inhabitants, then this Sustainable Urban Development module is for you! There are no simple solutions to these grand challenges. Rather the challenges cities face today require a holistic, systemic and transdisciplinary approach that spans different fields of expertise and disciplines such as urban planning, urban design, urban engineering, systems analysis, policy making, social and environmental sciences and entrepreneurship. This course is all about this integration of different fields of knowledge within the metropolitan context. The course is set up in a unique matrix format that lets you pursue your line of interest along a specific metropolitan challenge or a specific theme. You will discover possible solutions for your city’s challenges and what it takes to implement these solutions. We invite you to take the first steps in understanding the principles that will be essential to transform metropolitan regions into just, prosperous and sustainable places to live in! This course forms a part of the educational programme of the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions and is developed by Wageningen UR and TU Delft, two of the founding universities of AMS Institute. These materials relate to the collection "Governance and Institutional Arrangements of Complex STE Systems."

Course on Robust Policies for Operations Management Problems

This publication concerns the overview and lecture notes for the course Robust policies for operations management problems. For all other materials, please check the resources (part 1-5) and the links to the web lectures. Societal and industrial parties are facing uncertainties in demands, costs, and many more parameters on which their revenues based. So, the important question is: how companies are making decisions while many of the decision parameters are uncertain? In this resources related to this course we will learn how to answer this question from the perspective of “robustness". This is concept that helps us to make decisions that are not vulnerable to the changes in the uncertain parameters. So, most important concept that will be discussed is: Robustness in Optimization problems. Robustness is critical, especially in making strategic and tactical decisions, which are the decisions that are optimal for a long time. Furthermore, it is important to know how the companies should react to the realization of an uncertain parameter. For instance, what companies should do when the demand is known, the prices are set, the weather condition is known, and etcetera. Learning objectives: Different ways of formulating optimization problems Robust decisions methods to solve or approximate the formulated optimization problems Apply these methods to Operation Management problems and real-life cases. This course consists of 5 modules: -Module 1: Introduction and motivation 1.A: Lecture: Introduction 1.B: Lecture Motivation -Module 2: Static robust optimization 2.A: Robust Conterpart 2.B: Vertex enumeration 2.C: Robust Facility Location 2.D: Uncertainty set Selection -Module 3: Adaptive robust optimizationo What the idea behind Finite Adaptibility is and how to formulate it mathematically. 3.A: Adaptivity in optimization - Adaptive robust optimization - •Difference with (static) RO 3.B: Finitely adaptability 3.C: Affine decision rules 3.D: Finite scenario approach -Module 4: Robust optimization with integer variable 4.A: Lecture 4.B: Excercise and solutions -Module 5: Art of modeling
