Ventilation systems in high-speed trains - Teacher version

This exercise analyses the cabin ventilation systems of high-speed trains to work toward creating a safe, comfortable and energy efficient interior climate. Due to a growing awareness of the health risks of traveling in shared spaces, train travel has gone down (during the Corona pandemic and in its aftermath). Because train travel is better for the environment and necessary for the continuance of the train company, train companies aim to provide better ventilated cabins to encourage travel without raising costs.

For this case, students read a short briefing paper (Milli et al. 2016), a short piece representing the pro-patent vs. anti-patent debate (Science Business, 2016), the paper, “Patenting and the Gender Gap: Should Women Be Encouraged to Patent More?” by and Inmaculada de Melo-Martin (2013). Students write short arguments that combine empirical data on patenting with arguments about women’s performance in STEM fields and the commercialization of science. An optional stage asks students to give and receive feedback on each other’s responses.

Misconduct – Volkswagen’s ‘Defeat Design’ [student version]

In this CBE students will reflect on the theme of misconduct by considering the case of the ‘dieselgate’ emission-scandal that got public attention in 2015. They are expected to do a bit of research beforehand or watch the Netflix episode of Dirty Money on Volkswagen (season 1, episode 1). Students will contemplate on the different roles of responsibility involved in the case and will assume the perspectives of involved actors as an exercise. Accordingly, they will create a moral scenario, a story, as a tool to reflect on the different values at stake in this case of misconduct and to conceive of strategies of ethical anticipation.
