University-Society Boundaries

Collectievan Boundary Crossing

Identification of your own and others’ expertise

This learning activity is meant to identify available and lacking expertise, skills and attitudes in a project team. Preferably, the activity is carried out when a team just started to collaborate and has a bit of an impression of what the project and or project assignment is about. Students put as many as possible knowledge aspects, skills and attitudes they master on separate post-its. They collect and categorise their findings and discuss overlap and gaps in their project teams’ expertise/portfolio. The assignment ends with the development of an action plan for dealing with any of the identified teams’ limitations/risks.

Questions to ask to trigger reflection on BC learning

This document contains a set of questions that can be posed to learners in a BC setting to trigger reflection on their BC learning. The questions are categorised by (sub)learning mechanism and aligned with the BC Rubric (Gulikers, J., & Oonk, C. (2019). Towards a rubric for stimulating and evaluating sustainable learning. Sustainability, 11(4), 969.). The list of questions are illustrative, certainly not exhaustive.

Co-creation Workshop: A manual for facilitators

This document is a teacher/facilitator manual for a workshop on co-creation (duration 1.5h). The manual has been designed for a setting in which students support each other’s research proposal design. This set-up (content and schedule) and suggested tools for co-creation can also be used in various other co-creative settings. The applied methods for co-creation touch upon various learning mechanisms of boundary crossing: Identification to learn to know each other including other people’s backgrounds and interest; Reflection where it comes to walk in another’s shoes and support other participants’ learning; and Transformation because of the intention to co-create ‘1+1=3’ proposals, in the sense that students aim to co-create really innovative proposals, across the boundaries of what an individual student might come up with.

Doing a consumer interview

This document includes guidelines for students (Bachelor Food Technology) to do a consumer interview and find out the consumer perspective on a certain food product. During the course in which the interview is a learning activity, students develop an innovative food product in which they have to take the consumer perspective into account. This document contains four sections: (1) Instructions for the first interview (on raw / existing food material); (2) Instructions for the second interview (on innovated / studentdeveloped food material); (3) Tips for performing the interviews; and (4) Instructions for what to write about the interviews in the final report.
