Tinkering with healthcare technologies. Interactive redesign of bio-medical artefacts from a crip techno-science perspective

In this exercise, students will engage with ethical issues in the design and innovation of healthcare technologies through a hands-on interactive tinkering workshop. Using a wide variety of scrap materials, students collaborating in small groups will alter existing healthcare technical artefacts in an effort to promote the values of inclusivity, accessibility, and social justice, and to question ableist assumptions surrounding medical artefacts. The interactive hands-on workshop is deepened through an engagement with stakeholder testimonials as well as crip techno-science and Warm Technology theories.

Changing Roles in Medical Care: Haptic Surgical Robots

Training with haptic robots may reduce mistakes by allowing doctors to have more practice before they work on human beings. However, they do not provide training in interaction, patient care or familiarity with living and embodied subjects, though perhaps it is unclear how important this is in current medical training. Haptic robots are also more expensive for more highly sensitive technology, and this may or may not deliver on investment. This case allows students to consider how much virtual training will alter the experience of a surgical education and what the pros and cons of these new technologies may include

The use of biotechnologies for enhancement: genetic engineering and social ethics

This case invites students to explore, debate, and find consensus on ethical aspects of biotechnologies related to enhancement. Students are provided with an overview of some ethical views on enhancement which they use as inspiration for two debates: one that focuses on questions of moral luck vs. distributive justice in deciding whether or not to pursue genetic engineering, and a second that asks if scientific progress should be subject to limitations based on its carbon emissions impact.

Communicating Research to the Public: Coronavirus, joggers, and social media

This case study asks students to use the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity and Adina L. Roskies’ article “Neuroimaging and Inferential Distance” (2007) to discuss and assess a recent controversial example of communicating scientific findings to the public during Covid-19. Students prepare the materials in advance of class, where they work in small groups to assess the case in light of the two sources. The class reconvenes for a plenary discussion in which they generate tips and tops, or good and bad practices, for integrity in the communication of scientific findings in the era of social media.

Animal-tested labels on Medication? - Student version

In this CBE, you will design a label for medication that has been tested on animals. Afterwards, you will develop insight into the protocol scientists have to follow when testing on animals by roleplaying a meeting of the DEC (AEC) advising the CCD. You will analyse a real-life proposal and make a decision regarding its execution.

Students are asked to represent different stakeholders, which they will have to identify themselves. Students discuss a worst-case scenario and a responsibility allocation. Subsequently, students are asked to think of strategies in their role as a stakeholder to deal with such worst-case scenarios in advance and can make use of Value Sensitive Design.

Sharing information on genetic makeup for big data analysis

Imagine working at a lab that runs diagnostics on the genetic makeup of individual persons in combination with other individual information, e.g., personal habits and living conditions etc. The amount of data you collect on individuals over time is extensive, and it can be used for general big data analyses as well as for individual risk assessments. How should access to this data and to respective analyses be handled?
