City Politics for Sustainable Cities
How do the ways in which cities engage in sustainability actions fit into a state's political scenario? Traditionally, cities have been positioned at the lowest hierarchical level in terms of power and authority within a state's political context. Nevertheless, nowadays many cities assert their capacity to solve many problems efficiently without depending on the national government. Plus, cities often require a quick, effective response to problems that require urgent solutions, such as climate change or food shortage. In the following video, professor Katrien Termeer will illustrate the huge potential of cities to act both effectively and democratically against climate change. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Design policies; governance arrangements and coordination structures for resilience planning and response addressing policy-making; public private partnerships and civic engagement.
