VR environment for the course "In search of the Masses in Antiquity"

This is a 3D model of a part of Rome, produced for the course "In Search of the Masses in Antiquity". Includes some crowds and a procession, to enable a crowd perspective and reflect on specific hypotheses and reconstructions. The model was created by the 4D Research Lab of the University of Amsterdam for the project 'Virtual Past Places', in collaboration with course teacher Danielle Slootjes. The emulated situation is the triumph of the Bellum Judaicum. For this situation, compare the account of Flavius Josephus and other historical and iconographic accounts of this event with actual space. Bringing this into 3D space allows students to have more input available than through the historical texts and imagery: the line of sights, spatiality and awareness of being in a crowd, watching a triumph. A fictional central area gives entry to the two scenes. This model is accessible as a VR room using Hubs Cloud software (virtualplaces-uva.eu). For reproducability and reuse, consult the manual at https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.30490373 and follow the instructions to set up your own Hubs Cloud instance. For the relevant dataset, please use the link to the Zenodo deposition. Funding and context Virtual Past Places has been made possible by a grant, the 'Stimuleringsregeling Online Onderwijs' from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap, OCW), coordinated by SURF, the cooperative association of Dutch educational and research institutions. Virtual Past Places includes open access publication of all developed teaching materials as Open Educational Resources, the development of training materials, and the organisation of inspiration and counselling sessions for peers. In case you're interested in the results of this research project, and/or participate in it, please contact J.Waagen@uva.nl.

Byzantium & Friends | 52. Crowd behavior in imperial Rome and Constantinople, with Daniëlle Slootjes Thursday Jun 17, 2021

A conversation with Daniëlle Slootjes (University of Amsterdam) on the behavior of crowds in late antique Rome and Constantinople, based on her chapter "Crowd Behavior in Late Antique Rome," in the edited volume Pagans and Christians in Late Antique Rome: Conflict, Competition, and Coexistence in the Fourth Century (Cambridge 2015) 178-194. As our own political world is increasingly revolving around mass protests, it is time to revisit what we know about the dynamics of crowds in imperial Roman cities, whether they acted for or against the regime of the day. Check out also the volume that Daniëlle co-edited with Erika Manders, Leadership, Ideology, and Crowds in the Roman Empire of the Fourth Century (Stuttgart 2019).

Impact of Empire: Volume 21 | Rome and the Worlds beyond its Frontiers

This volume offers an expansive approach to interactions between Romans and those beyond the borders of Rome. The range of papers included here is wide, both in terms of subject matter and with respect to approach. That said, a number of important themes bind the essays. Who is an insider, and who the outsider? How were these categories of person, or identity, fashioned and/or recognized in antiquity? How shall we recognize them now? What are the categories, or standards, for measuring or determining inside and outside in the Roman world? And then, of course, what are the repercussions when inside and outside come into contact? What happens when the outside is in, or the inside out?

Impact of Empire: Volume 7 | Administration, Prosopography and Appointment Policies in the Roman Empire

This volume presents the proceedings of the seventh workshop of the international thematic network 'Impact of Empire', which concentrates on the history of the Roman Empire and brings together ancient historians, archaeologists, classicists and specialists on Roman law from some 30 European and North American universities. The seventh volume focuses on the impact that crises had on the development and functioning of the Roman Empire from the Republic to Late Imperial times. The following themes are treated: the role of crises in the empire as a whole; the relationship between crises and the Roman economy; modes in which crises influenced the presentation of emperors, and the impact of crises on and reception in (legal) writings.
