Water supply in Cape Town

The potential stress that Cape Town is facing, is a significant shortage of water supply. However, this is not a new challenge for the South-African city, as it experienced the water crisis from 2017/2018. This fact might ease the study case, because the following consequences and problems are known from the crisis that occurred. On the other hand, it also makes the case more interesting: what are the lessons learned from the first crisis? How could this have happened? And should a different approach be maintained if this were to happen again? This report tried to answer these questions, by first examining the effects on the urban network. The following most important stresses and shocks have been found here; the collapse of the sanitation system, straining the health care system. The negative impact on the economy, due to the setback of tourism, agriculture and water taxes. Furthermore, the social inequality in Cape Town would exacerbate as water would become a high-valued product. Secondly, the attempt has been made to answer how the probability of this crisis will change as a result of climate change, which does not give a good prospect. Finally, several possible solutions are investigated, from which a sustainable way of re-using water in combination with the construction of aquifers could be a crucial solution.

Self-study module Introduction to Plant Biology - Water in plants

This self-study module is part of the series ‘Introduction to Plant Biology’ and focuses on the role of water in plants, explaining how water is taken up, transported, and regulated to support plant growth and survival. It is designed for students learning basic plant biology and for teachers seeking clear figures and explanations for educational use. The module covers water uptake by roots, long-distance water transport through the xylem and phloem, the relationship between stomata and transpiration, and examines how environmental factors influence these processes.

Self-study module Introduction to Plant Biology - Abiotic stress

This self-study module is part of the series ‘Introduction to Plant Biology’ and introduces abiotic stress in plants and explains how plants cope with and adapt to challenging environmental conditions. It is designed for students learning basic plant biology and for teachers seeking clear figures and explanations for educational use. The module covers key abiotic stresses - heat, cold, flooding, drought, salinity, and high light intensity - and examines the physiological, structural, and adaptive strategies plants use to survive and grow under these conditions.

Managing the Water System in Amsterdam

How are types of water linked within the water system? Which stakeholders are responsible for managing which types of water? In this video, dr. Frans van de Ven will introduce you to the pathways of urban water in Amsterdam and he will show who is responsible for managing the water and what their responsibilities are. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Explain shocks and stresses on critical services and infrastructures (CSIs) of STE systems resulting from a range of disastrous events. DURATION: 1 short video (~ 6 min long)

Water Management Challenges in Amsterdam

Now you have an overall idea of the urban water system of Amsterdam, and the stakeholders involved in managing this system. Now, let’s find out which challenges water managers are facing in Amsterdam and other Delta cities. Frans van de Ven will share with you two of the main public interests in urban water management and indicate which challenges are emerging. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Explain shocks and stresses on critical services and infrastructures (CSIs) of STE systems resulting from a range of disastrous events. DURATION: 1 short video (~6 min long)

Quantifying the Performance of Resilience Increasing Measures: Workshop introduction

This resource contains a workshop about quantifying the performance of resilience increasing measures and 3 exercises (Excel) to reflect on shocks and stresses. These exercises focus on Climate, Water and Urban Areas. Students will be asked to reflect on shock and stresses, the (initial and cascading) impact from different perspectives and measures to mitigate the negative consequences (again by looking at many different variables).

Amsterdam Rainproof: Water Management

In Amsterdam, Waternet is the responsible organisation for ensuring a safe and healthy urban environment and a water system that is able to cope with the expected changes in weather conditions due to climate change. How do they address these challenges? Let’s ask Daniël Goedbloed, program manager Amsterdam Rainproof at Waternet, to find out how Waternet works in a city that will be able to cope with more intense rainfall events. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Explain shocks and stresses on critical services and infrastructures (CSIs) of STE systems resulting from a range of disastrous events. DURATION: 1 short video (~8 min long)
