Adaptive Expertise Assessment

How To Write A Quantitative Research Paper

So, you need to write a ‘quantitative’ research paper, and you want to know: what is the correct way of writing such a paper? The answer is, unfortunately: it depends … For one, there is no universally accepted, ‘correct’ way of writing any paper in the social sciences in general. Moreover, even just within the so-called ‘quantitative’ research tradition specifically, there exist different viewpoints on what makes for a good research paper. To muddy things up even further, how to write a paper will also depend on the specific research question(s) that it addresses. Hence, even the same scientist might opt for varying approaches in different papers. Having said that, it is possible to identify some common rules and practices that are often followed, as well as a number of practices that should generally be avoided. Based on these common rules and practices, this document is meant to help you on your way with writing a ‘quantitative’ research paper by offering a number of tips, tricks and rules-of-thumb. None of these rules and practices are set in stone, and you (or your teacher/supervisor) may have excellent arguments to deviate from them. However, in general, following them will greatly increase the quality of your paper.

Efficient and complete literature searches for researchers

A comprehensive workshop on effective search strategies for literature identification. During the workshop we will examine your search processes and the key components of a systematic search strategy. Particular attention will be paid to: • Academic databases • Developing a search strategy • Formulating and combining search terms • Academic and grey literature search approaches • Tools that may be useful for your literature search At the end of the workshop you will be able to use different search techniques and strategies. Who can attend? • (External) PhD candidates or researchers at the Nijmegen School of Management who are planning to conduct a literature review. How can you prepare for the workshop? • Try to find academic literature on your research topic. • Record your search activities, including search terms, search operators, filters and databases used, and publications found. • If you like, you can look at the checklist for reporting literature searches in systematic reviews. This will give you an idea of how to report a search. During the meeting we will discuss your experiences and relate them to effective search techniques and strategies. NOTE This comprehensive workshop was given at the Radboud University, School of Management in October and November 2024. It is shared here as inspiration and guidance for PhD candidates who are struggling to set up good search strategies in order to find relevant literature.

E-Learning Module Urban Green Spaces

The University of Twente ITC together with Tropenbos Suriname developed this e-module on urban green spaces in the tropics in the context, and using the results, of their UTSN Twinning project on "Towards a green and more livable Paramaribo". With this e-module we aim to provide access to quality learning material for Surinamese and Dutch MSc students and other learners. This e- module is designed to be used in two ways, i) within a course, introducing students to the subject of urban green benefits and management. ii) as stand-alone short course. The module is entirely self-study and can be followed without an internet connection. Cite as: Schwarz. N. and Willemen L., 2021. Chinese Cities: Citizen participation in developing resilient and eco-friendly cities

HOW TO NAVIGATE THIS CASE STUDY: First, please refer to the Teacher's Guide using the yellow "View Materials" button on the left pane. The teacher's guide outlines the purpose, contents, approach, case structure, and technical information of this case study. This case study was curated from other independently published open educational resources and from existing materials on this platform. These resources are also organized by domain. At the bottom of each resource's page, you can see both the city case study and SURF Resilience domain to which it belongs. Click on the case study or the domain name to navigate to the case study homepage or SURF Resilience collection, respectively. OVERVIEW: This case study contains a teaching guide, five thematic foci, and a gaming simulation. In this case study, you will dive deeper into the resilience and sustainability in Chinese cities. You will see how issues like air pollution affect citizens' daily lives and how successful policies contribute to sustainability. With a high rate of urbanization, Chinese cities have resorted to using the Sponge City concept to successfully manage water. To deepen your knowledge, you can learn about other shocks and stresses facing Chinese cities in resilience trend reports. Finally, you can bring your knowledge into practice by diving into the game “Creators of Shanghai” which has been developed by TU Delft students.

Unit 4: Argumentation, identifying a research problem and formulating a thesis statement

Videos: Video 8: What is an argumentative essay? Video 9: What do you want to argue? Homework task(s): Read assigned case study materials Hand in Assignment 2: Critical Reflection Suggested tasks for the tutorial: Exercise on argumentation in case study texts In groups, using a case study article: 1. What is the research gap that the article aims to address? 2. Identify the central idea or central argument of the article. • How is it expressed in the text? • Where is it expressed in the text? • What is the relation with the research gap that you identified in (1)? 3. Does the author argue for one point of view, or evaluate different perspectives? Discussion questions on thesis statements • What is a thesis statement, and how is it different from a research question? • What makes a good thesis statement? • Are these good or bad thesis statements? - ‘Urbanisation increases the population of cities.’ - ‘Are people who live in cities healthier?’ - ‘Urbanisation is driven by people moving from rural areas, by people in cities having more children, and by longer lifespans in cities.’ - ‘On balance, cities and urban living today have important health advantages, particularly in the developing world.’ * *this thesis statement is taken from Leon, David A. “Cities, urbanization and health”, International Journal of Epidemiology 37, no. 1 (2008): 4–8. https://doi.org/10.1093/ije/dym271
