Beyond Google Scholar

Students often struggle to find relevant literature for their thesis projects. The main aim of this tutorial is two-fold, namely to teach students (1) how to find relevant literature using various databases and search strategies and (2) how to critically reflect on the role of digital databases and Generative AI tools in their search process. The package includes a lecturer’s manual and two versions of the same tutorial: one with steps in Excel and one without. The tutorial can be delivered as an in-class workshop (2–3 hours) or assigned as a take-home assignment. The databases and tools used in this tutorial include Zotero, Google Scholar, Project MUSE, JSTOR, ChatGPT, and Excel. The tutorial can be used in any higher education classroom and is particularly suitable for courses that prepare students for writing a BA or MA thesis.

Heuristic Trees as a Digital Tool to Foster Compressionand Decompression in Problem‑Solving

This design-based study addresses the issue of how to digitally support students’problem-solving by providing heuristics, in the absence of the teacher. The problemis that, so far, digital tutoring systems lack the ability to diagnose students’ needsin open problem situations. Our approach is based on students’ ability to self-diag-nose and find help. To this purpose, we introduce a new type of digital, interactive,help-seeking tool called a heuristic tree. Students’ use of this tool is supported by ahelp-seeking flowchart. The design of heuristic trees is based on our reinterpretationof the notion of heuristic in terms of terms of compression. Our research questionis: How do heuristic trees and the help-seeking flowchart influence students’ prob-lem-solving behaviour? This question was studied in the context of a number theorycourse for in-service mathematics teachers. During five weeks, fifty students workedon fifty-five problems supported by heuristic trees. Our data consists of video obser-vations of two small groups of students, a teacher log, interviews with these twogroups, and a survey filled in by twenty-three students. The main results are that thesupport by heuristic trees and the help-seeking flowchart allows students to work inthe absence of a teacher and to engage strongly with problems, maintaining owner-ship of the solution methods. Moreover, as intended by the tree structure, studentslearned to focus not just on the small steps of the solutions, but also on the generalheuristic techniques, theorems, and concepts that should be learned in the process offinding those solutions.

CollateX

CollateX is a software to read multiple (≥ 2) versions of a text, splitting each version into parts (tokens) to be compared, identify similarities of and differences between the versions (including moved/transposed segments) by aligning tokens, and output the alignment results in a variety of formats for further processing, for instance to support the production of a critical apparatus or the stemmatical analysis of a text's genesis. It resembles software used to compute differences between files (e.g. diff) or tools for sequence alignment which are commonly used in Bioinformatics. While CollateX shares some of the techniques and algorithms with those tools, it mainly aims for a flexible and configurable approach to the problem of finding similarities and differences in texts, sometimes trading computational soundness or complexity for the user's ability to influence results. As such it is primarily designed for use cases in disciplines like Philology or – more specifically – the field of Textual Criticism where the assessment of findings is based on interpretation and therefore can be supported by computational means but is not necessarily computable.

Didactical Design Tool Interdisciplinary Education

As a teacher, you face some major challenges in designing, teaching and evaluating interdisciplinary education. So we have developed a design instrument to support you in your role as a teacher in choosing specific learning objectives, activities and assessment formats, which together design the students’ interdisciplinary learning process. This instrument utilises the constructive alignment design concept for interdisciplinary education.

Machaut Resources (The International Machaut Society)

The International Machaut Society is a not-for-profit scholarly organization founded in 1985 and devoted to the study, criticism, performance, research, and exchange of ideas related to all aspects of the works of the poet and composer Guillaume de Machaut (ca. 1300-1377) and their manuscript and performance traditions. Fields of inquiry fostered by the Society include, but are not limited to, literary history and criticism; music history, criticism, and theory; the performing arts; art history; and codicology. Study and performance of works of other poets and composers or of other performance and manuscript traditions are also included within activities sponsored by the Society insofar as they contribute significantly to study of the background, context, or influence of the works of Machaut. The Society encourages membership with the broadest possible international representation and currently boasts members from almost every continent. Any person may become a member of the International Machaut Society upon payment of dues. Right now we are unfortunately only able to accept U. S. funds, but we are looking into ways to receive other currencies.
