Spaces to Code

Byzantium & Friends | 146. Ezana of Aksum, the first Christian king in Africa, with Aaron Butts Thursday Dec 18, 2025

A conversation with Aaron Butts (University of Hamburg) on the conversion to Christianity of Ezana, the fourth-century king of Aksum (in modern Ethiopia and Eritrea). "Conversion" is a conventional term, but what Ezana's inscriptions and coins reveals is a complicated process of appealing to different groups and the coexistence of religions in his realm and the royal monuments. The conversation is based on Aaron's forthcoming paper 'Ezana of Aksum: The First Christian African King,' Aethiopica 28 (2025).

Adhesive Connections in Glass Constructions

In this video, Christiane Kothe explains the use of structural adhesive bonding in glass construction, a technology with ancient roots that was revolutionized by modern synthetic and silicone adhesives. Adhesive connections offer key advantages over mechanical fixings, including transparent aesthetics, the ability to join different materials, and even stress distribution, which reduces local weak points. However, their success depends on meticulous surface preparation and managing long curing times, which can impact production efficiency. The video covers the fundamental principles of adhesion and cohesion, the chemical curing process of structural adhesives, and the critical importance of surface pre-treatments to ensure bond strength and long-term durability. Through methods like contact angle measurement and mechanical testing, including accelerated aging, the performance and reliability of these bonds can be validated. When applied correctly, adhesive connections significantly enhance the safety, efficiency, and design possibilities of modern glass structures. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Comparative Analysis of the Glass Plate Design

In this video, Ivana Rakić presents a comparative analysis of the economic impact of designing glass elements according to different standards, focusing on the new European draft standard FprEN 19100-1(2,3):2023, the existing EN 16612:2019, and the American ASTM E1300-16. The study examines common double-glazed insulating units under wind load, using the minimal required glass thickness for loadbearing resistance as the key comparison criterion. The results indicate that for annealed glass, all three standards yield similar economic outcomes. However, for heat-treated glass like heat-strengthened and thermally toughened glass, the new FprEN 19100 standard leads to a lower capacity utilisation factor, making it the most economical design choice, while the ASTM standard is the least economical. The analysis concludes that the choice of standard significantly influences design economy and highlights the need for further research incorporating factors like safety and long-term performance for a more comprehensive understanding. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Ivana Rakić and Nebojša Buljan for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Effective Thickness Method

In this video Martina Eliášová explains how the polymer interlayer between glass panes influences the performance of structural elements like floors and roofs. The key property is the interlayer's shear modulus, which is highly dependent on temperature and load duration. At high temperatures or under long-term loads, the shear modulus is low, and the glass panes behave more independently. At low temperatures or under short-term loads, the shear modulus is high, causing the panes to act as a single, monolithic unit. This variable behavior must be considered in design to accurately calculate stress and deflection. The video mentions that modern standards, like the effective thickness method in EN 16612, provide simplified analytical models to account for this partial shear interaction, leading to more economical and accurate designs than older, more conservative practices. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Martina Eliášová for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. The Medieval Podcast | Inventing the Renaissance with Ada Palmer

Given that the term literally means "rebirth", the Renaissance throws some not-so-subtle shade on the period that comes before it. So, where did the idea of the Renaissance actually come from? And was it truly a golden age? This week, Daniele speaks with Ada Palmer about Petrarch, Machiavelli, atheism, and how we should look at the period formerly known as the Renaissance. This podcast is made possible by the generous support of listeners like you! To find out how to help spread the joy of medieval history, please visit patreon.com/themedievalpodcast

Stress! Moderne plaag of modewoord? | Radboud Reflects Lecture by neurowetenschapper Erno Hermans en communicatiewetenschapper Enny Das

Learning objectives minor Science, Technology & Innovation: Biomimicry

The learning objectives of the Biomimicry minor blend theoretical understanding with practical skills. Students engage with a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines including chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering, gaining a comprehensive grasp of biomimicry principles. Practical objectives emphasize hands-on experiences, where students apply these principles through advanced prototyping techniques such as CAD, 3D printing, and microcontroller programming. The course aims to enhance students’ abilities to think critically and solve problems creatively, preparing them to design and execute bio-inspired projects. Additionally, the program nurtures team collaboration and communication skills, essential for articulating project insights to diverse audiences, and managing long-term, complex projects effectively.
