Embracing the Future of the Wadden Sea Landscapes

This book focuses on the design works of landscape architecture schools. It collects some materials from the exhibition “Embracing the Future of the Wadden Sea Landscapes. Voices and Imageries from Students and Educators,” which was held at the De Kanselarij in Leeuwarden as part of the 2023 Landscape Architecture Triennale. Students and educators from TU Delft, Amsterdam Academy of Architecture, Wageningen University, and Hanze Academy of Architecture presented design results and ideas on the future of the Wadden Sea coasts and landscapes, from the sea to the coast to the rural and urban inland areas.

Coastal Dynamics

This textbook on Coastal Dynamics focuses on the interrelation between physical wave, flow and sediment transport phenomena and the resulting morphodynamics of a wide variety of coastal systems. The textbook is unique in that it explicitly connects the dynamics of open coasts and tidal basins; not only is the interaction between open coasts and tidal basins of basic importance for the evolution of most coastal systems, but describing the similarities between their physical processes is highly instructive as well. This textbook emphasizes these similarities to the benefit of understanding shared processes such as nonlinearities in flow and sediment transport. Some prior knowledge with respect to the dynamics of flow, waves and sediment transport is recommended.

E-Learning Module Urban Green Spaces

The University of Twente ITC together with Tropenbos Suriname developed this e-module on urban green spaces in the tropics in the context, and using the results, of their UTSN Twinning project on "Towards a green and more livable Paramaribo". With this e-module we aim to provide access to quality learning material for Surinamese and Dutch MSc students and other learners. This e- module is designed to be used in two ways, i) within a course, introducing students to the subject of urban green benefits and management. ii) as stand-alone short course. The module is entirely self-study and can be followed without an internet connection. Cite as: Schwarz. N. and Willemen L., 2021. Japanese Cities: Critical infrastructure design for extreme resilience

HOW TO NAVIGATE THIS CASE STUDY: First, please refer to the Teacher's Guide using the yellow "View Materials" button on the left pane. The teacher's guide outlines the purpose, contents, approach, case structure, and technical information of this case study. This case study was curated from other independently published open educational resources and from existing materials on this platform. These resources are also organized by domain. At the bottom of each resource's page, you can see both the city case study and SURF Resilience domain to which it belongs. Click on the case study or the domain name to navigate to the case study homepage or SURF Resilience collection, respectively. OVERVIEW: This set contains a teaching guide, seven thematic foci, and gaming simulations. In this set, you will discover the challenges and opportunities provided by the concept of urban resilience on mitigating and preventing flooding. Examples of design considerations of hydraulic structures and spillways will show you how resilience can be integrated into urban planning and management. Then, you will dive into the topic of large waves, typhoons, storm surges, and tsunamis. You will see how one natural disaster can pose potential downstream risks for society, as exhibited by the 2011 tsunami and the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant failure. Moreover, you will see how tsunamis impact multiple urban subsystems such as transportation, buildings, sanitation, and environment. You will have the opportunity to think about solution strategies and their ethical considerations. Then, you will look into the process of post-disaster reconstruction after a disaster has uprooted existing systems. Lastly, you will see how man-made climate change has created alternative urban climates. You will also look into how to design for a better, more comfortable urban microclimate. End by playing related resilience games.

Save the city: Maputo Resilience Game

This game models how Maputo responds to shocks and stresses and strives to increase its resilience from 2020 through 2050. There are four subsystems in the game: agriculture, health care, society and culture, and infrastructure. Each subsystem represents an important part of the city and should try to increase their resilience through developing and maintaining adaptation measures. Each measure has a different effect on the resilience of a subsystem. There are a range of shocks and stresses that can disrupt the city. The game takes time, the government’s budget, probability, and cooperation into account to represent some of the complex factors at play real world.

Bounce Back: A resilience game about Manila

Manila is the capital city of the Philippines and one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The greater area, Metropolitan Manila, is regularly subjected to a range of shocks. Every year multiple typhoons cause a lot of damage and also droughts and water pollution are severe problems in the Philippines. In this game you and your team, the urban council of Metropolitan Manila, are in charge of building resilience to these shocks.

Typhoons in Manila

Metropolitan Manila is a highly populated area and lies in the most-active tropical cyclone basin in the world. Tropical cyclones (or typhoons) are strong cyclonic storms that develop over warm ocean waters and when moving across coastal regions can bring immense damage to coastal cities. This report investigates the cascading effects typhoons have had in the past on Metro Manila and looks into possible solution strategies to strengthen the resilience of the urban area. Poverty is one of the most prevalent issues in Manila. Because of improper housing options and poor infrastructure, low-income communities are forced to live in flood-prone areas and therefore highly vulnerable to disaster events that are accompanied by flooding or storm surges. Informal settlements are the part of the urban system most affected by typhoons and in special need for attention in mitigation work. Proposed solution strategies include improvements in urban drainage, inclusive relocation plans, livelihood assistance and capacity building programs, weak solid waste management practices and rehabilitation of the wetland ecosystem.

Pluvial floods in Rotterdam-2

Rotterdam, a city located at the delta region and only 35 km to the sea, suffers from increasingly frequent intensive rainfall due to the climate change. The pluvial flood it causes overwhelms the urban drainage system first and then damages the transport systems. Residential and industrial infrastructures in the city and local ecology will be influenced as well. Ethically, it causes anxiety and conflictions among citizens, even triggers people’s unsatisfaction and denouncement. Solutions provided here focus on urban drainage and discharge system, water retention facilities, infiltration zones/ green spaces, protection of vulnerable infrastructures and government regulations. This report consists of seven parts: introduction to pluvial flood, affected parts of urban networks, condition till 2050 under climate change, ethical consequences, solution strategies, ethical implications of solutions and effect monitor.
