Constructive, Collaborative, Contextual, and Self-Directed Learning

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) has shaped education at Maastricht University (UM) for more than five decades. Yet PBL is sometimes narrowly associated with one particular instructional format: the seven-step approach. Constructive, Collaborative, Contextual, and Self-Directed (CCCS) Learning at the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) takes a broader perspective. It presents the four CCCS learning principles as a flexible set of design principles for meaningful teaching, learning, and assessment. The booklet brings together more than thirty examples from across FSE. Organised around Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), the cases span educational levels from pre-university education to PhD training and cover a wide variety of formats, including tutorials, laboratories, projects, fieldwork, assessment, games, and technology-enhanced learning. Each case starts from an educational challenge, describes a concrete intervention, and reflects on the design through the CCCS lens. Readers encounter examples ranging from student-led mathematics tutorials and open-ended physics experiments to robotics projects, ecological fieldwork, co-created assessment, serious games, and authentic engineering challenges. Together, they demonstrate that student-centred learning can take many different forms while remaining academically rigorous and appropriate to the demands of STEAM education. Rather than prescribing a single method, the booklet inspires educators to rethink their own practice. It shows how CCCS learning principles can serve as a shared language for educational innovation while allowing room for disciplinary differences, creativity, co-creation, playful learning, technology, and different approaches to PBL. The collection is intended as a practical source of ideas for teachers, course coordinators, programme directors, educational developers, and University Teaching Qualification participants within Maastricht University and beyond. Its central message is simple: CCCS learning is not confined to one classroom format or one disciplinary tradition; it is a versatile foundation for designing engaging and meaningful higher education.

Responsible Anticipation and Visioneering

This exercise targets the development of students' capacities to critically analyze existing technological visions and enables them to create their own responsible socio-technical visions. Through group work and discussions, students examine technological promises embedded in anticipation discourses, uncover hidden values and assumptions, and develop alternative narratives that can guide engineering practice and policy decisions

Humans, Robots & Cats with Lynn de Rijk | In a Nutshell

How advanced are robots? Why do we communicate differently with them than with humans? And why are cats, in the end, perhaps the better companions than robots? In today’s episode, Antonia talks with Lynn de Rijk about how we communicate with beings that aren’t human, or, differently put: how we communicate with cats and robots. And why that is sometimes anything but straight-forward. Lynn talks about her research at the cat café in Nijmegen and Amazon robots that have already ceased to exist before they even hit the consumer market. Lynn de Rijk is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Arts and part of the Centre for Language Studies. They investigate how humans attribute meaning to non-verbal conduct – especially between humans and non-humans. Would you like to learn more about communication between humans, cats, robots and others? Then follow Lynn’s suggestion and have a look at the books Ways of Being by James Bridle and Animal Languages by Eva Meijer. Edit: Jara Majerus Cover: Antonia Leise

Workshop Publishing Open Educational Resources

In this interactive workshop, participants learn how to adapt educational resources, so they can be shared online. After the training, the participant will know: 1) what requirements open educational resources should meet; 2) how to avoid infringing copyright; 3) what Creative Commons licences are and how to use them for your own OERs; 4) how to find copyright-free images; 5) how to share material on Edusources. The slides are the main resource. The other assignments are integrated in the slides, and can also be used as stand-alone assignments.

Contact met robots. Verbindend of vervreemdend?

The dual challenge from AI and cognitive science

This lecture offers a theoretical framework for analysing the ways in which insights about human and artificial cognition challenge existing legal (reasoning) practices. It briefly touches on possible pathways to address these challenges as well. The lecture is part of project RECOGNISE. RECOGNISE aims at developing an interdisciplinary training curriculum on legal reasoning and cognitive science, filling a gap in legal higher education. It is a strategic partnership of six European universities for higher education sponsored by the ERASMUS+ Programme. The project will provide the interested learners (legal researchers, law students, legal practitioners, and beyond) with introductory and advanced materials on topics including heuristics and biases in adjudication, cognitive structure of legal concepts, and defeasible reasoning in law. Materials will be provided in the form of an online handbook, video lectures, summer schools, and other online and on-campus activities.
