VR environment for the course "Historical Archaeology"

This is a 3D reconstruction of the Jordaan in the 19th century, produced for the course "Historical Archaeology". The model was created by the 4D Research Lab of the University of Amsterdam for the project 'Virtual Past Places' in collaboration with course teacher Vladimir Stissi. This model contains a few houses by which photos from the 'beeldarchief' can be compared by students, to understand the spatiality and layout of the neighbourhood and houses. This model is accessible as a VR room using Hubs Cloud software (virtualplaces-uva.eu). For reproducability and reuse, consult the manual at https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.30490373 and follow the instructions to set up your own Hubs Cloud instance. For the relevant dataset, please use the link to the Zenodo deposition. Funding and context Virtual Past Places has been made possible by a grant, the 'Stimuleringsregeling Online Onderwijs' from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap, OCW), coordinated by SURF, the cooperative association of Dutch educational and research institutions. Virtual Past Places includes open access publication of all developed teaching materials as Open Educational Resources, the development of training materials, and the organisation of inspiration and counselling sessions for peers. In case you're interested in the results of this research project, and/or participate in it, please contact J.Waagen@uva.nl.

VR environment for the course "Lieux de Mémoire"

This is a 3D model of Troy, produced for the course "Lieux de Mémoire. Space, Story and the Construction of Memory". The model was created by the 4D Research Lab of the University of Amsterdam for the project 'Virtual Past Places' in collaboration with course teacher Gert Jan van Wijngaarden. This model contains three scenes based on excavations in Troy, each with a new added phase of reconstruction: the first being the archaeological area, the second the architectural reconstruction and the third being the addition of myths and stories to these finds. A fictional central area forms the fourth scene, with the purpose of giving entry to the other scenes. This model is accessible as a VR room using Hubs Cloud software (virtualplaces-uva.eu). For reproducability and reuse, consult the manual at https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.30490373 and follow the instructions to set up your own Hubs Cloud instance. VR environment for the course "In search of the Masses in Antiquity"

This is a 3D model of a part of Rome, produced for the course "In Search of the Masses in Antiquity". Includes some crowds and a procession, to enable a crowd perspective and reflect on specific hypotheses and reconstructions. The model was created by the 4D Research Lab of the University of Amsterdam for the project 'Virtual Past Places', in collaboration with course teacher Danielle Slootjes. The emulated situation is the triumph of the Bellum Judaicum. For this situation, compare the account of Flavius Josephus and other historical and iconographic accounts of this event with actual space. Bringing this into 3D space allows students to have more input available than through the historical texts and imagery: the line of sights, spatiality and awareness of being in a crowd, watching a triumph. A fictional central area gives entry to the two scenes. This model is accessible as a VR room using Hubs Cloud software (virtualplaces-uva.eu). For reproducability and reuse, consult the manual at https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.30490373 and follow the instructions to set up your own Hubs Cloud instance. VR environment for the course "The Digital City"

This is a 3D reconstruction of Uilenburg in the 17th century, produced for the course "The Digital City: Architecture and History of Jewish Amsterdam". Includes neighbourhood layout and gables reconstructed by students of previous years. Students can compare and evaluate reconstructions based on the VR environment and historical materials. This helps understand historical houses, giving students a better sense than 2D historical maps. This model is accessible as a VR room using Hubs Cloud software (virtualplaces-uva.eu). For reproducability and reuse, consult the manual at https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.30490373 and follow the instructions to set up your own Hubs Cloud instance. VR environment for the course "Archaeological Materials in Context"

This is a 3D model of a pottery lab created for the Bachelor course "Archaeological Materials in Context". The model was created by the 4D Research Lab of the University of Amsterdam for the project 'Virtual Past Places' in collaboration with course teacher Jill Hilditch. The 3D model contains a fictional archaeology laboratory environment for technical ceramics study. Students use microscopes to look at thin sections, relate to different types of present rocks, and pottery. Around the sorting table they can discuss the ceramic objects and sort them into chronological/functional/technical groups. This model is accessible as a VR room using Hubs Cloud software (virtualplaces-uva.eu). For reproducability and reuse, consult the manual at https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.30490373 and follow the instructions to set up your own Hubs Cloud instance.
