Niet-pluis instrument: intervisie tool

Glass Sustainability: Rethink

In this video, Angelica Rota explains the "Rethink" strategy for reducing the environmental impact of glass by moving from a linear to a circular economy. The video outlines two main approaches. The first is to rethink the supply chain by increasing the circularity of float glass, avoiding low-value downcycling, establishing systems to collect post-consumer glass waste, and preferring selective deconstruction over demolition. The second approach is to redesign glass products for disassembly, ensuring components like those in an insulating glass unit can be easily separated at end-of-life using reversible connections instead of permanent adhesives. While redesigning complex products presents challenges, these strategies are crucial for creating a sustainable, circular glass supply chain. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Angelica Rota for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Introduction to Environmental Sustainability in Glass

In this video Rebecca Hartwell outlines the two key factors for sustainable glass design: material efficiency and energy efficiency. Material efficiency focuses on reducing the environmental impact from production to end-of-life, guided by the "9R framework". Energy efficiency concerns the glass's role in reducing a building's operational energy for heating, cooling, and lighting. The video explains that while advancements like double glazing and low-E coatings have improved energy efficiency, they often create complex, multi-material assemblies that are difficult to disassemble and recycle. Consequently, unlike container glass, most post-consumer flat glass is rarely recycled and is often downcycled or landfilled. A whole life-cycle perspective, balancing embodied and operational carbon, is essential for a sustainable glass future. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Rebecca Hartwell for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Sustainable EU Economy: an interactive Textbook for Business Students

Dear Reader, Welcome to Sustainable EU Economy. This book is more than a textbook—it is an invitation to explore how the European Union shapes business, society, and sustainability in today’s interconnected world. My hope is that it will inspire you to think critically, engage actively, and see how Europe’s vision for a climate‑neutral and inclusive future connects directly to your own journey as a student and professional. This book was created to guide you through one of the most dynamic and influential regions in the world—the European Union. With its single market of over 450 million consumers and policies that shape global standards, the EU is not only a trading bloc but also a laboratory for resilience, sustainability, and innovation. This book will help you see the EU not just as an institution, but as a living system that directly impacts business, society, and the environment. You will explore how Europe is responding to challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and shifting geopolitics, and how these responses create opportunities for businesses and professionals like you. This textbook is not a static resource but an interactive digital reference, designed to evolve alongside the changing study of European integration and sustainability. By combining case studies, discussion prompts, and applied exercises with live seminar content and guest lectures, it adapts to new research, policy debates, and global challenges. An analysis of the current developments and scenarios for the transition to a fossil-free energy society this century

This century, greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxides must be significantly reduced. Greenhouse gases absorb and emit infrared radiation that contributes to global warming, which can lead to irreversible negative consequences for humans and the environment. Greenhouse gases are caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal, and natural gas, but livestock farming and agriculture are also to blame. In addition, deforestation contributes to more greenhouse gases. Of the natural greenhouse gases, water vapor is the main cause of the greenhouse effect, accounting for 90%. The remaining 10% is caused from high to low by carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone. In addition, there are industrial greenhouse gases such as fluorinated hydrocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride, and nitrogen trifluoride that contribute to the greenhouse effect too. Greenhouse gases are a major cause of climate change, with far-reaching consequences for the welfare of humans and animals. In some regions, extreme weather events like rainfall are more common, while others are associated with more extreme heat waves and droughts. Sea level rise caused by melting ice and an increase in forest fires are undesirable effects of climate change. Countries in low-lying areas fear that sea level rise will force their populations to move to the higher-lying areas. Climate change is affecting the entire world. An estimated 30-40% o f the carbon dioxide released by the combustion of fossil fuels dissolves into the surface water, resulting in an increased concentration of hydrogen ions. This causes the seawater to become more acidic, resulting in a decreasing of carbonate ions. Carbonate ions are an important building block for forming and maintaining calcium carbonate structures of organisms such as oysters, mussels, sea urchins, shallow water corals, deep sea corals, and calcareous plankton.
