Introduction to Stochastic Hydrology

Hydrologic systems are both complex and extremely heterogeneous in time and space. As hydrological models are simplified versions of reality, their predictions are by definition subject to uncertainty. The field of stochastic hydrology focuses on quantifying this uncertainty along with prediction. This book aims to present an overview of the field of stochastic hydrology at an introductory level. A wide range of topics and methods will be treated, while each topic and method is only treated at a basic level: descriptive statistics; probability and random variables; hydrological statistics and extremes; random functions; time series analysis; geostatistics; forward stochastic modeling; and state prediction and Kalman filtering. The book can be used for a 10-15-week course at third-year undergraduate or first-year graduate level.

Sustainable EU Economy: an interactive Textbook for Business Students

Dear Reader, Welcome to Sustainable EU Economy. This book is more than a textbook—it is an invitation to explore how the European Union shapes business, society, and sustainability in today’s interconnected world. My hope is that it will inspire you to think critically, engage actively, and see how Europe’s vision for a climate‑neutral and inclusive future connects directly to your own journey as a student and professional. This book was created to guide you through one of the most dynamic and influential regions in the world—the European Union. With its single market of over 450 million consumers and policies that shape global standards, the EU is not only a trading bloc but also a laboratory for resilience, sustainability, and innovation. This book will help you see the EU not just as an institution, but as a living system that directly impacts business, society, and the environment. You will explore how Europe is responding to challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and shifting geopolitics, and how these responses create opportunities for businesses and professionals like you. This textbook is not a static resource but an interactive digital reference, designed to evolve alongside the changing study of European integration and sustainability. By combining case studies, discussion prompts, and applied exercises with live seminar content and guest lectures, it adapts to new research, policy debates, and global challenges. In this way, you may explore the EU not only as a historical and political project, but also as a dynamic economic system that continually reshapes business strategy, trade, and innovation. About the Jean Monnet Chair in Sustainable EU Economy: Awarded by the European Commission to Dr. Beata Kviatek and hosted by Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the Jean Monnet Chair in Sustainable EU Economy represents the first such Chair at a Dutch university of applied sciences. Co‑financed by the Erasmus+ Programme and Hanze University, the Chair advances knowledge of the EU’s transition toward a climate‑neutral, resource‑efficient, and socially inclusive economy. It promotes excellence in teaching and research, integrates sustainability priorities into business education, and fosters dialogue among academia, policymakers, businesses, and society. By producing impactful studies on green finance, energy transition, and corporate responsibility, and by linking local initiatives with EU goals, the Chair provides a vibrant platform for debate and engagement on Europe’s sustainable future.

Week 8: Organising a Case Competition

This final, high-energy lesson—or event—is all about case-solving competitions between students. Format, rules, and possible schedules are all part of this concluding session. A case competition is an inspiring and effective way to conclude a case-cracking training series. It gives students the opportunity to apply their skills in a high-pressure, real-world setting that fosters focus, teamwork, and clear communication under time constraints. Competitions not only allow for immediate feedback and continuous improvement but also mirror the dynamics of real consulting work, where firms compete for projects. Whether students solve a live business challenge or a simulated case, involving industry professionals as judges adds authenticity and depth to the experience. Including a final round enhances learning for all participants—both those presenting and those observing—and helps generate visibility and excitement around the program, inspiring future engagement.

Week 6: Storytelling

Around an engaging video, a lesson has been built with specific learning objectives, activities, and supporting materials for students. They learn how to harness the power of storytelling to enhance their case presentations. The instructors explain why storytelling is an essential skill for structuring and communicating insights effectively. They introduce the “Red Line” method for creating a logical flow from problem to solution and share tips for creating visually compelling presentations. Key advice includes using simple, branded slides, focusing on visuals over text, and maintaining a clear structure. This lesson will guide students in using storytelling to create presentations that are not only informative but also engaging and memorable.

Systematic review as a research method

A systematic review is a research method used to answer a very specific research question. Scoping reviews ask broader questions such as “What is already known about certain practices/theories etc.?” In this workshop you will learn more about: • Different types of reviews • Phases and stages of a review • Tools for your review process. Who can attend? • (External) PhD candidates or researchers at the Nijmegen School of Management who are planning to conduct a literature review. How can you prepare for the workshop? • Search for systematic reviews on your own research topic. Select at least one systematic review and one other type of review. • Read the method section of the articles you have found. Use the PRISMA checklist to evaluate on the authors' method. What items of the method are according to PRISMA, and which items are you missing? You're also invited to take a look at the workshop "Efficient and complete literature searches for researchers" It'll give you a great foundation before moving on to the workshop about systematic review as a research method. NOTE This comprehensive workshop was given at the Radboud University, School of Management in October and November 2024. It is shared here as inspiration and guidance for PhD candidates who are struggling to set up a good systematic review in order to find relevant literature.

Navigating the Landscape of Blended Higher Education

In recent years, blended teaching formats have become increasingly important in higher education. Designing effective blended education is challenging and requires a profound knowledge of digital tools and technologies, as well as the didactical proficiency to deploy them effectively and efficiently within the learning environment. However, little is known about didactical design principles to support teachers in creating an effective blended design. This chapter reports on the combined results of two independently conducted extensive literature reviews that investigated (a) didactical strategies, methods, and techniques concerning online education in the existing empirical research on higher education, and (b) the effects of different blended teaching formats, compared to face-to-face education, on learning outcomes and/or psychosocial outcomes in higher education students. It was found that blended education can enhance student achievement and psychosocial well-being, yet that the instructional approach plays a crucial role. Combining the insights of both studies has subsequently led to a series of evidence-informed recommendations to design effective blended education with a view to the broad development of students. Readers will be provided with practical guidance on how to implement these design principles in educational practice.

ICF in Person-centred Rehabilitation

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is a linking framework for interprofessional collaboration and structuring the needs of a client. The person's functioning is the starting point for person- and goal-oriented iterative rehabilitation, for which ICF applications are needed. This material aims to support the use of the ICF in person-centred rehabilitation and interprofessional practice by offering ICF tools. It is based on the MAGPIED rehabilitation process: Meet, Assess, Goal set, Plan, Implement, Evaluate, and Document. Even though the material follows the rehabilitation model, it can be used by any professionals who uses the ICF. The idea of the material is to offer a short theoretical background, examples, and tools as well as examples of assignments for the reader. It can be used by any professionals as an inspiring package of ICF tools or supporting material when educating the usage of ICF in higher education institutions. For the lectures, the material includes a supplement PowerPoint presentation for the Assess and Plan phases.

INPRO Student-Run Interprofessional Learning Ward (SR-IPLW)

In 2019, an SR-IPLW was started in the rehabilitation centre “Revalidatie Friesland” (RF) in The Netherlands. This was a collaboration between RF and Hanze University of Applied Sciences (HUAS). The starting point of the SR-IPLW was that students are 'in the lead' and to create an innovative climate in which we continuously work on improvements for patients, students, lecturers, and health care professionals through interprofessional collaboration. We work based on practice-based evidence. This document describes the current situation at the SR-IPLW. In the future, we hope to further optimize the SR-IPLW based on the described principles.
