Routekaart Prevent - Open onderzoek

From extinction to de-extinction: CRISPR/Cas9 and biodiversity

CRISPR/Cas9 technology allows selectively editing (i.e. deleting or inserting) gene sequences in any organism to change its genetic profile. In humans, this technology carries the promise of eradicating certain genetic diseases. Recently, however, it has been used to tinker with biodiversity: bringing some extinct animals back to life and alternatively, making some species go extinct. However, it is not fully clear yet how to control this technology (e.g. not eradicate the whole species but only control its population), how to prevent the accidental release of this technology and to prevent doomsday terrorist scenarios.

Hierarchy at the University: Nuisance or Necessity? | Radboud Reflects Lecture by organizational psychologist Joyce Schleu and vice dean and microbiologist Laura van Niftrik

Within the university, all kinds of hierarchical structures play a major role between students and teachers, PhD candidates and supervisors, department heads and faculty staff. Hierarchy structures all these relationships. How does this shape the way we interact, and how safe do we feel in academic spaces? Freedom and Safety in Transportation: Speed controls and other techno-regulation in driving

This case focuses on Jilles Smids’ paper “The Moral Case for Intelligent Speed Adaptation” (2015) to explore whether techno-regulations (like cars that prevent drivers from speeding) should be used to promote public values like health and safety, to what extent they are in contrast with individual freedom, whether such techno-regulations are morally acceptable, and why or why not.

Self-study module Introduction to Plant Biology - Plant nutrients

This self-study module is part of the series ‘Introduction to Plant Biology’ and introduces plant nutrients and their essential roles in plant growth and development. It is designed for students studying basic plant biology and for teachers seeking clear explanations and illustrative figures for educational use. The module explores the distinction between macronutrients and micronutrients, provides examples of key nutrients, and explains how plants respond to different types of nutrient deficiencies. In addition, it addresses how nutrient management practices in agriculture are used to prevent deficiencies and reduce yield losses.
