Byzantium & Friends | 157. Julian Augustus and the dream of a Platonic Roman empire, with Jeremy Swist Thursday May 21, 2026

A conversation with Jeremy Swist (Michigan State University) on the emperor Julian (361-363 AD) and how he tried to combine his love of philosophy with ruling the Roman empire. We talk about why Julian continues to excite such passions, how in some ways he may have been more Roman than Greek, and how he read Roman history in light of the theurgical Neoplatonism that he espoused. The conversation is based on Jeremy's recent book, Julian Augustus: Platonism, Myth, and the Refounding of Rome (Oxford University Press 2025).

He turns to a wide range of disciplines: neuroscience, philosophy, and spirituality. Watch and listen to journalist Michael Pollan, who joins cognitive philosopher Marc Slors and neuroscientist Jolien Francken in a search for consciousness: what is it, who has it, and why. The Digital Age: What about Human Values? | Radboud Reflects Lecture with Tamar Sharon

How can we make room for the human dimension in a world that is becoming increasingly digitized? Digitization seems to be the solution to everything: problems in education, healthcare, and even the justice system. How can we continue to make room for other essential values such as creativity, empathy, caring for one another, privacy, cooperation, or the right to a fair trial? Listen to philosopher Tamar Sharon, who argues that digitization has become our new framework for thinking. She points out the dangers of this: is human dignity being compromised? De Reflector – Beyond Elemental Loss | Radboud Reflects Lecture by philosopher Marjolein Oele

How can the classical elements—fire, water, air, and earth—help us grapple with loss in an era of climate change? In her latest book Beyond Elemental Loss, philosopher Marjolein Oele observes how shifting elements, such as unusual weather, polluted air and sudden wildfires, can leave us feeling disoriented. Drawing on indigenous knowledge, as well as great thinkers such as Elinor Ostrom and Michael Serres, she makes a case for trust-building as a path forward. Yet, in an age of historically low trust in politics, how can trust offer a solution? Listen to this conversation between philosopher Cees Leijenhorst and environmental philosopher Marjolein Oele about her latest book, covering how we can view loss during a climate crisis through the elements, the importance of communities, and whether she is optimistic about the future. About the speaker Marjolein Oele is professor of Philosophy of the Humanities at Radboud University. She is the author of Beyond Elemental Loss: Shifting Constellations of Water, Fire, Air and Earth and E-Co-Affectivity: Exploring Pathos at Life's Material Interfaces. Her most recent research project focuses on ‘affects’ in the Anthropocene. Did you find this interesting? Subscribe to the channel on which you listened to De Reflector.
