Teaching & learning for a better future: Education for sustainable development (ESD)

This is a brief introduction to the topic of Sustainable Development in higher education teaching create for teachers. It touches on three areas: 1) Why all higher education teachers should know about sustainable development & should implement ESD into their own teaching. 2) How you, irrespective of your discipline, can address the topic sustainable development in your own teaching. 3) Places where you can find more information & teaching resources.

plusROOF: Steel-glass roof system with innovative SSG bonding

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Tim Seidel summarizes the plusROOF research project, which investigated the structural bonding of glass directly to steel substructures as a more efficient and design-flexible alternative to traditional complex and expensive skylight construction. The project identified a suitable polyurethane anti-corrosion coating that met adhesion standards, developed a parameter-based planning tool for double-curved designs, and validated the system through component tests. A 5.5x3.1 meter demonstrator successfully underwent rigorous testing for air permeability, driving rain tightness, and wind load resistance, achieving excellent performance and laying the foundation for future regulatory approvals and practical applications. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Tim Seidel for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. The creation of these resources has been (partially) funded by the ERASMUS+ grant program of the European Union under grant no. 2022-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000089750. Neither the European Commission nor the project's national funding agency DAAD are responsible for the content or liable for any losses or damage resulting of the use of these resources.

Insulated Glazing Units

In this video, Francesco Fiorito explains the importance and construction of Insulated Glazing Units (IGUs), which are fundamental to energy efficiency in modern buildings. Windows are a significant source of heat loss, accounting for a large portion of a building's energy transfer. An IGU combats this by consisting of two or more glass panes separated by a spacer and sealed to create a single unit with an insulating cavity filled with dry air or inert gas. The key components that define an IGU's performance are the glass panes, which can be laminated, tinted, or coated for specific performance needs; the spacer, which maintains the gap between panes; the primary and secondary sealants, which hold the unit together and protect it from moisture; and the cavity filling, where gases like argon significantly improve insulation over dry air. IGUs are primarily classified by their number of cavities: double glazing (DGU) and more insulating triple glazing (TGU). A newer development is Vacuum Insulated Glazing (VIG), which offers superior thermal performance in a very slim profile but faces challenges with durability. The video concludes that by combining these different components and technologies, a wide variety of IGUs can be created to meet specific aesthetic and energy performance requirements for buildings. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Francesco Fiorito for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. The creation of these resources has been (partially) funded by the ERASMUS+ grant program of the European Union under grant no. 2022-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000089750. You Have a Part to Play TOOLKIT

This toolkit is intended to provide educational innovators in higher education – lecturers and coordinators, for example, but also students or directors of education – with tools to give sustainability (both as a field of knowledge, as well as skills) a more solid place in their educational programmes. This toolkit was developed by the Radboud University project team 'You Have a Part to Play', made possible by the Comenius Network. The Comenius Network was established in 2018 with the aim of uniting teachers who are involved in educational innovation in further education. Sharing knowledge about educational innovation is central to this goal.

TALK OUT LOUD PROTOCOL - Competency matrix

The matrix combines the SDGs (vertical row) and the HES competencies (horizontal row). The empty squares represent spaces where an SDG and a competency verlap - i.e. within a specific course or assignment.

Rephrased SDGs for Higher Education for Sustainability (HES)

Based on the interviews held with teachers and students from 38 BA programmes, we rephrased the SDGs from the perspective of HESD. These descriptions can help to inform or inspire discussions about sustainability themes within an academic research and teaching context. The list of rephrased SDGs was used to create a set of ‘SDG competency cards’, that can be used to create learning goals that combine SDGs and competencies.

Acts and Responsibility of AI

This lecture considers the relevance of the cognitive sciences for law when it comes to acts and responsibility (or liability) of artificially intelligent agents. It addresses whether we (1) can, and (2) should hold AI liable. The lecture is part of project RECOGNISE. RECOGNISE aims at developing an interdisciplinary training curriculum on legal reasoning and cognitive science, filling a gap in legal higher education. It is a strategic partnership of six European universities for higher education sponsored by the ERASMUS+ Programme. The project will provide the interested learners (legal researchers, law students, legal practitioners, and beyond) with introductory and advanced materials on topics including heuristics and biases in adjudication, cognitive structure of legal concepts, and defeasible reasoning in law. Materials will be provided in the form of an online handbook, video lectures, summer schools, and other online and on-campus activities.
