Integrated Infrastructure Design Guide

Infrastructure forms the backbone of our society – from roads and railways to waterworks and ports – as critical part of vital systems for mobility, water and space. But that backbone is under strain. Ageing systems, climate change and scarce resources force us to rethink fundamentally how we design, use and value infrastructure. This Design Guide starts with one urgent question: how can we make infrastructure future-proof in a world of uncertainty? It introduces integrated approaches in which design, engineering, policy and societal value come together through a wide range of inspiring examples related to urban and regional accessibility and development, spatial quality, flood protection, and ecological restoration. The book demonstrates how infrastructure can be more than merely a functional system. It becomes a driver of societal value and prosperity, and a strategic instrument that connects quality of life, sustainability and economic development. This Design Guide offers a clear conceptual framework to understand and design infrastructure that is not only more efficient, but also more sustainable, inclusive and meaningful. Drawn from thematical insights and lessons, and applicable methods, techniques and strategies by a broad range of scientists and professionals of practice with a background architecture, urban development and design, landscape architecture, civil engineering, economics, governance or policy. A substantial and indispensable guide for designers, engineers and policymakers committed to shaping the infrastructure and the society of tomorrow.

ShareXR : Challenge-Based Learning with XR (BMS Lab, University of Twente)

ShareXR introduces a challenge-based learning (CBL) approach for integrating research, design, and development in engineering education through extended reality (XR). Developed at the University of Twente’s BMS Lab, the model addresses the increasing need for multidisciplinary collaboration by teaching students to speak a shared language across research, design, and technical development. Even for those without an engineering, scientific or STEM background. This course offers a hands-on, multidisciplinary learning experience where students take real research ideas and transform them into innovation projects within a complete and validated open learning XR ecosystem. With reusable multimedia course content, the course enables students to understand interdisciplinary collaboration, while each module focuses on one of the four pillars: Research, Design, Development, and Project Management — guided by principles of balance, iteration, and collaboration. By working with different tools like one-page project canvases, students will learn how to translate research ideas into structured user stories, requirements, and project management tasks, while exploring how XR tools can act as a human-centered medium for prototyping, testing, and validating ideas without requiring coding skills.

XR Prototype: Learning tools to create a research Prototype

Welcome to the course! Main Concepts The four pillars of innovation projects: research, design, development and project management Challenge-Based Learning: a student-centered approach to learning in which students choose a specific real-world problem to tackle using expertise from multiple disciplines Prototype: a first functional version of a device or program Unity: a wide-used development engine that can be used for 3D environment design Course Learning Goals Deliver a functional prototype aligned with your own research question Apply strategies to help you manage time, priorities, and collaboration effectively Understand how to balance your project scope, resources, and expectations Validate both the technical build and the research logic of your project.

Adaptive Expertise Assessment

Communicating Like Your Own Technician

Main Concepts Technician: The person who analyzes and troubleshoots technical problems by gathering details and asking clarifying questions. Documentation: Clear records of actions, errors, and evidence (e.g., screenshots, notes, steps) used to explain and solve problems. Diagnostic questions: Targeted questions that help identify what happened, what was expected, and what was tried before a problem occurred. Learning Goals Recognize how poor communication slows problem-solving. Learn practical strategies to explain technical problems clearly. Practice asking and answering diagnostic questions effectively. Understand how documentation supports collaboration. Key Takeaways Everyone can “be their own technician” by learning to describe what’s happening, not just that something is wrong. Emotions can block clarity—pause, observe, and explain the situation calmly. Good communication saves time for both researchers and developers. Asking the right questions turns confusion into cooperation. Further Exploration Search for “effective communication between developers and researchers” Search for “troubleshooting techniques for non-technical users” Search for “how to report a technical issue clearly” Search for “empathy in multidisciplinary project teams”

Week 1: An Introduction to Case Solving and Case Competitions

Around 4 captivating videos, a lesson has been built with specific learning objectives, activities, and supporting materials for students. The core principles of case solving are being introduced—a hands-on, engaging approach to addressing real business challenges. Students learn how to think like consultants, working in diverse teams to analyze complex problems and develop practical solutions. The case-solving process follows a structured cycle: understanding the case, analyzing root causes, generating solutions, planning implementation, and presenting recommendations. Alumni reflect on how these experiences strengthened their confidence, teamwork, and decision-making skills—benefits that continue to serve them in their careers. By the end of this introduction, students will grasp what business cases are, how to approach them strategically, and how to collaborate effectively in teams.
