Game Development with Students

The project Game Development with Students introduces interested educators to an innovative teaching tool with practical insights from the international relations classroom. Game development with students is a specialized form of game-based and project-based learning. It incentivizes both student creativity and in-class student-teacher co-creation and enables a particularly participative and result-oriented approach to the subject matter. The method is thematically flexible enough to travel across different fields of study and is adaptable to different levels of complexity. To enable other educators to implement this innovative teaching tool, we develop instructional materials (an educators handbook as well as educational videos), providing both general information on the experiential, game-based learning theory undergirding the method as well as practical, hands-on tips and trick on how to implement it in different educational settings. In doing so, we address the important, interconnected educational challenges of the transferability and sustainability of teacher developed tools.

The Origins of Structural Gass design

In this video, Tim Macfarlane, a structural engineer in London, traces structural glass from its hesitant beginnings in 1989 to its role in contemporary architecture. Glass is unique not because it is new, but because of its magical simplicity: a thin sheet that keeps weather out while connecting inside to outside. Through constant innovation, glass has undergone numerous processes such as lamination, toughening, or coatings that, while improving performance, also reduce reusability and raise environmental questions about whether large, complex glass is truly sensible. Early projects with architects Eva Jiřičná and Rick Mather forced Tim to question fundamental issues the industry had not addressed: how strong glass really is, how to calculate it, and how to make it safe, information once treated as private intellectual property. His role became one of moral integrity, negotiating between market pressures and client ambitions. Tim advises young engineers to keep an open mind, love life, and have fun with curiosity. True intelligence comes from within, not from AI. The journey of asking questions and fulfilling yourself as a human being is what matters. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Tim Macfarlane for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. The Medieval Podcast | Self-Help and the Seven Deadly Sins with Peter Jones

We've all been there: suddenly face-to-face with our ugliest selves, wrestling with pride, envy, anger, sloth, avarice, gluttony, or lust. AKA the Seven Deadly Sins. In the Middle Ages, Christian thinkers divided moral missteps into these seven familiar categories, allowing them to ponder the many ways humanity can fall into sin - as well as how to get out of it. This week, Danièle speaks with Peter Jones about how people grappled with the Seven Deadly Sins in the Middle Ages, some pretty fun confessions, and how the medieval perspective might just help us better navigate the modern world. This podcast is made possible by the generous support of listeners like you! To find out how to help spread the joy of medieval history, please visit patreon.com/themedievalpodcast

Algorithmic assessment systems

This class pursues a twofold goal of making students both think about the use of AI in recidivism prediction/social benefits allocation and reflect on the possible use of AI for making evaluative, moral judgments. To do so, students are first presented with contextual information about recidivism prediction and social benefits allocation controversies before the class through mandatory reading. During the class, students are divided into four groups that take contrasting positions on these two issues (recidivism prediction and social benefits allocation) and are asked to suggest (counter-)arguments for the position that they have been assigned in a debate-style manner, following academic argumentative norms. Later, students use ChatGPT/GPT3 or an alternative LLM with a chat interface to prompt it about arguments and counter-arguments pertaining to their position. As a result, students compare and discuss the answers they have come up with and those offered by ChatGPT, both within the groups and with the whole class, exploring different dimensions of using AI for evaluative moral judgments
