[ENG] Pressure cooker Transdisciplinarity – A theoretical approach

What – This pressure cooker is an introduction to the theory of the why and what transdisciplinary education. You’ll learn why transdisciplinary education can be useful and what it means. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a class of students (all levels; any group size) as well as a team of educational developers or teachers. Why – Guided training in, for instance, transdisciplinary education improves the actual working with, or teaching of, it. How long – In-class activities take under one hour. Preparation at home takes up to 40 minutes. Our practical approach (the how), which you can take after this pressure cookers takes op two hours.

Maintaining Classroom Management

In this report, the design of a blueprint for learning classroom management is presented. This program will be designed for pre-service lower secondary school teachers in the Netherlands (age group 11 to 16-year-old students; 2e graads in Dutch). These teachers are completing a bachelor’s degree in a specific subject area and take a six-month minor in which they receive pedagogical and didactical training to be prepared for teaching in secondary schools. This minor is accompanied by an internship in which the pre-service teachers put their skills into practice.Although the minor allots extensive attention to classroom management, teachers often struggle to manage both class and content. This is understandable as, although classroom management can be learned with the right amount of practice and support, mastery of classroom management skills takes around four years on average takes. To guide pre-service teachers well on their way towards mastering classroom management, a rigorous and evidence-based approach to teaching classroom management to pre-service teachers is needed. An evidence-based approach should allow for a productive and enjoyable learning process for pre-service teachers. One well-studied approach is found in the Four Component Instructional Design (4C/ID) model which offers an evidence-based approach to teaching complex skills. This paper adapts the 4C/ID model and applies it to the skill of classroom management for pre-service teachers in the Netherlands.

Maastricht University TutorKit

The UM TutorKit is a tool kit for tutors to use in collaborative learning settings and activities such as tutorials, group work or small seminars. It consists of several playful items for group dynamics development, feedback provision and evaluation purposes. For dissemination at Edusources, the digital version of the kit consists of 1) an icebreaker card deck with images and questions, 2) feedback dice with a focus on appreciation and conflict conversations, 3) evaluation sheets and 4) support cards with more tips and tricks regarding collaborative learning and group dynamics and information about educational design and delivery in a problem-based learning environment. Feel free to reach out to edlab-info@maastrichtuniversity.nl for more information or share your experience in using the TutorKit.

Learning objectives minor Science, Technology & Innovation: Biomimicry

The learning objectives of the Biomimicry minor blend theoretical understanding with practical skills. Students engage with a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines including chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering, gaining a comprehensive grasp of biomimicry principles. Practical objectives emphasize hands-on experiences, where students apply these principles through advanced prototyping techniques such as CAD, 3D printing, and microcontroller programming. The course aims to enhance students’ abilities to think critically and solve problems creatively, preparing them to design and execute bio-inspired projects. Additionally, the program nurtures team collaboration and communication skills, essential for articulating project insights to diverse audiences, and managing long-term, complex projects effectively.

Podcast as examination

The materials we share here were made for the 2023-2024 course "Wicked Legal Ethics" at Erasmus School of Law, but the podcast has been used as examination in different courses. The podcast examination is a very useful method for allowing students to develop critical reflection and creative expression. The podcast is a partial group examination, to be combined with individual testing. Testing every student on an individual level on course content before the creative podcast process, puts every group member on an equal footing and provides them with the confidence to enter into constructive and critical discussions with their fellow students. The podcast has been discussed in M. Luth-Morgan et al, “Chat-GPT als katalysator voor meer authentieke toetsing: praktijkvoorbeelden uit het ethiekonderwijs” Ars Aequi sept 2024 (Dutch).

ICF education continuum: from basic knowledge to practical ICF implementation material.

It is recognized by the WHO that the use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) requires knowledge of the ICF framework, its philosophy and principles, and practical tools. This report provides an overview of the iterative development processes of the "INPRO ICF Basic Course" materials and the "ICF in person-centered rehabilitation" advanced learning materials to support the interprofessional implementation of ICF. The added value of the INPRO ICF Basic course is the additional material developed to support the WHO ICF eLearning Tool, e.g., introduction and motivational lecture, slides and videos, and reflection seminar, where the participants discuss the most important aspects of ICF in small groups and the discussions is shared together in a big group. The developed ICF education continuum offers a learner-friendly, understandable basic knowledge of the ICF framework and additional ICF material for person-centered, interprofessional implementation. Even though the material follows the rehabilitation model, it can be used by any professional who uses the ICF.

ICF-based Tools and Practices to promote the use of ICF

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) is a linking framework for interprofessional collaboration and structuring the needs of a client. The need for practical training for professionals and the need for applications and tools to implement the ICF in clinical practice has been recognized. In total, 18 of the 20 planned development actions were completed. Four themes emerged: ICF training in the workplace (n=8), ICF videos (n=4), ICF tools (n=4), and ICF documentation (n=2). Bridging the gap between higher education and the work field was one of the ultimate objectives of the INPRO project. Much has been done, but it is clear that this work needs to continue in the future, in partnership with higher education institutions and working life. This report provides insight into how the developments were done and what the ICF-based tools and practices are.

Course description Minor Science, Technology & Innovation: Biomimicry

The Biomimicry minor at the University of Amsterdam, coded 5142DPB30Y, semester-long, 30 ECTS course offered in English from September to January. Targeted at third-year science bachelor students, the program explores biomimicry—a scientific method that draws inspiration from nature to solve modern technological challenges. The curriculum consists of a blend of lectures, workshops, and hands-on project work in the UvA Makerspace, where students apply their learning to develop real-life prototypes. The program culminates in the creation of a bio-inspired robot, resulting in the integration of acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
