Beyond Google Scholar

Students often struggle to find relevant literature for their thesis projects. The main aim of this tutorial is two-fold, namely to teach students (1) how to find relevant literature using various databases and search strategies and (2) how to critically reflect on the role of digital databases and Generative AI tools in their search process. The package includes a lecturer’s manual and two versions of the same tutorial: one with steps in Excel and one without. The tutorial can be delivered as an in-class workshop (2–3 hours) or assigned as a take-home assignment. The databases and tools used in this tutorial include Zotero, Google Scholar, Project MUSE, JSTOR, ChatGPT, and Excel. The tutorial can be used in any higher education classroom and is particularly suitable for courses that prepare students for writing a BA or MA thesis.

Dioptrice

Kepler's Dioptrice is a seminal work in the fields of optics and astronomy. Written in response to the ground-breaking telescopic discoveries announced by Galileo Galilei in March 1610, the Dioptrice contained the first theory of the telescope—a theory that Kepler was uniquely qualified to develop--and provided an essential foundation for modern geometrical optics. In the preface, Kepler highlights several examples of the close links which, then as now, exist between optics and astronomy. His excitement about Galileo's new observations is palpable, especially the discoveries of the four moons orbiting Jupiter and the phases of Venus. Both discoveries lent crucial support to the Copernican system, of which Kepler had been an ardent supporter since his days as a student in Tübingen. The Dioptrice is available here in a complete English translation for the first time, along with an introduction and numerous notes to help guide the reader through Kepler's text.

Scientific integrity and Open science in level 1 courses at UCU

At University College Utrecht, we teach about scientific integrity and open science as early as the first methodology course the students take. In this powerpoint, there's a small collection of materials that can be used in an English-taught program to provide a starting point to educate students on these topics.
