Ducks History test

This independent-study module introduces learners to the biology, ecology, and behavior of ducks (family Anatidae). Students will examine anatomical adaptations for aquatic life, migratory and social behavior, habitat and conservation status, and the ecological role ducks play in wetland ecosystems. The module combines short readings, video content, and self-check questions, and is suitable for independent completion within a broader biology, ecology, or environmental science curriculum.

Circulair Economy #4 - Making Sustainability Tangible: LCA, ECI, and the Circular Transition

In this episode, host Maerhaba Yishake speaks with Paul Prinssen, co-founder of EcoReview, about how Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the Environmental Cost Indicator (ECI/MKI) help organizations make sustainability measurable and actionable. Paul shares practical examples of how businesses and public organizations can use these tools to support circular design, sustainable procurement, and informed decision-making. Joining the conversation is Saxion student Stein Wieskamp, who brings a student perspective to the discussion.

[ENG] Pressure cooker Transdisciplinarity – A practical approach

What – This pressure cooker is a practical approach to the how of transdisciplinary education. You’ll learn how you can embed transdisciplinary education. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a class of students (all levels; any group size) as well as a team of educational developers or teachers. Why – Guided training in, for instance, transdisciplinary education improves the actual working with, or teaching of, it. How long – In-class activities take two hours. Preparation at home takes up to 40 minutes. Please go to the pressure cooker about the theoretical approach (the why & what) if you first want to know more about the theory.

Self-study module Introduction to Plant Biology - Photosynthesis light-dependent reaction

This self-study module is part of the series ‘Introduction to Plant Biology’ and introduces the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis and their role in converting light energy into chemical energy. It is designed for students studying basic plant biology and for teachers seeking clear explanations and illustrative figures for educational use. The module explains the two photosynthetic reactions: light-dependent and light-independent, with a focus on the processes occurring in the chloroplast during the light-dependent phase. Students explore the formation of the energy carriers ATP and NADPH, the splitting of water into oxygen, and the role of fluorescence as an indicator of disturbances in the photosynthetic process and therefore plant health.

Measure Sustainability: LCA

In this video, Angelica Rota explains the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and its specific application to glass products. The LCA is a standardized process that evaluates a product's environmental impact from raw material extraction ("cradle") to final disposal ("grave"). The assessment follows four phases: defining the goal and scope, conducting a life cycle inventory, assessing the environmental impacts, and interpreting the results. For construction products like glass, the life cycle is divided into modules covering production, use, end-of-life, and potential benefits from recycling. The findings of an LCA are often published in an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), a verified document that communicates transparent environmental data. For flat glass, the manufacturing stage is the most environmentally intensive, contributing the vast majority to its global warming potential due to the high energy required to melt raw materials. Increasing the use of recycled glass cullet is a key strategy for reducing this impact, as it significantly lowers the energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions of the melting process. Understanding LCA is crucial for identifying environmental hotspots and driving more sustainable practices in glass production and use. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Angelica Rota for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Introduction to Environmental Sustainability in Glass

In this video Rebecca Hartwell outlines the two key factors for sustainable glass design: material efficiency and energy efficiency. Material efficiency focuses on reducing the environmental impact from production to end-of-life, guided by the "9R framework". Energy efficiency concerns the glass's role in reducing a building's operational energy for heating, cooling, and lighting. The video explains that while advancements like double glazing and low-E coatings have improved energy efficiency, they often create complex, multi-material assemblies that are difficult to disassemble and recycle. Consequently, unlike container glass, most post-consumer flat glass is rarely recycled and is often downcycled or landfilled. A whole life-cycle perspective, balancing embodied and operational carbon, is essential for a sustainable glass future. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Rebecca Hartwell for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Week 4: Creating an Implementation Plan

Around an engaging video, a lesson has been built with specific learning objectives, activities, and supporting materials for students. The focus is on a key phase in the case-solving cycle: turning strategy into action through effective implementation. The instructors introduce a six-step framework that guides students in building a clear, realistic plan to bring strategic solutions to life. From setting SMART goals and allocating resources (using the MMM framework) to creating timelines, assigning responsibilities, and assessing risks, this lesson shows how to structure implementation at different levels. Using a case example, students see how thoughtful planning ensures feasibility and alignment across business functions. By the end of the lesson, students are equipped to translate ideas into impact with a well-structured roadmap.
