Integrated Infrastructure Design Guide

Infrastructure forms the backbone of our society – from roads and railways to waterworks and ports – as critical part of vital systems for mobility, water and space. But that backbone is under strain. Ageing systems, climate change and scarce resources force us to rethink fundamentally how we design, use and value infrastructure. This Design Guide starts with one urgent question: how can we make infrastructure future-proof in a world of uncertainty? It introduces integrated approaches in which design, engineering, policy and societal value come together through a wide range of inspiring examples related to urban and regional accessibility and development, spatial quality, flood protection, and ecological restoration. The book demonstrates how infrastructure can be more than merely a functional system. It becomes a driver of societal value and prosperity, and a strategic instrument that connects quality of life, sustainability and economic development. This Design Guide offers a clear conceptual framework to understand and design infrastructure that is not only more efficient, but also more sustainable, inclusive and meaningful. Drawn from thematical insights and lessons, and applicable methods, techniques and strategies by a broad range of scientists and professionals of practice with a background architecture, urban development and design, landscape architecture, civil engineering, economics, governance or policy. A substantial and indispensable guide for designers, engineers and policymakers committed to shaping the infrastructure and the society of tomorrow.

Introduction to Stochastic Hydrology

Hydrologic systems are both complex and extremely heterogeneous in time and space. As hydrological models are simplified versions of reality, their predictions are by definition subject to uncertainty. The field of stochastic hydrology focuses on quantifying this uncertainty along with prediction. This book aims to present an overview of the field of stochastic hydrology at an introductory level. A wide range of topics and methods will be treated, while each topic and method is only treated at a basic level: descriptive statistics; probability and random variables; hydrological statistics and extremes; random functions; time series analysis; geostatistics; forward stochastic modeling; and state prediction and Kalman filtering. The book can be used for a 10-15-week course at third-year undergraduate or first-year graduate level.

Facing Floods: A stakeholder river management game

In river management, decisions are influenced by multiple stakeholders, each with different priorities, needs, and levels of influence. While collaboration is essential to solve river-related challenges, these differences create a complex dynamic environment in decision-making processes. This game simulates the challenges of river management by placing players in the roles of various stakeholders, each with their own goals, needs, and budgets. Players must work toward achieving their individual objectives while negotiating and cooperating with others, balancing personal interests with the shared responsibility of managing the river. The "Facilitator Guide" (see downloads) is designed to assist you in organizing and facilitating a game with 7 or more players, as well as preparing for the session. Additionally, you will find the various game materials required for gameplay. These materials need to be printed on A4 or A3 paper, with detailed printing instructions provided in the "Print Instructions" file. Learning goals • Experience the decision-making process related to complex systems as the development and management of river engineering infrastructure. • Get acquainted with the interests and goals of the involved stakeholders, realize that they may be conflicting or equivalent, and possibly bond with each other. • Debate the effectiveness and impacts of river interventions on the river system, environment and society, from the perspective of a stakeholder. • Appreciate the challenges of proposing a solution that integrates different river interventions and satisfies the goals of multiple stakeholders. • Reflect on the challenges of decision-making processes in complex systems. This game was developed for the River Engineering module, more specifically the unit River Functions and Management, of the MSc Civil Engineering program of the Technical University of Delft (TU Delft). However, the game is suitable for anyone interested in learning about stakeholder involvement and interactions in river management. More information about the use of the game can be found in the facilitator manual. Credits: this game was developed by the TU Delft Gamelab (website:https://copy.gamelab.tbm.tudelft.nl/).

Cards Against Pedagogy

This card game is designed as a fun and interactive way of getting teaching staff to know each other while reflecting on different elements of their teaching. It is based upon the popular game, Cards Against Humanity, but this particular version can be used as an effective professional development activity because at the end of each round of the game, participants must discuss their answers to a reflection question. The reflection questions focus, for example, on their educational philosophy, their challenges, their growth as an educator or their achievements so far. This is a print and play version of this game, ideal for groups of 3 to 6 people with additional blank cards provided for you to make your own, should you wish.

Risk and Reliability for Engineers

This book covers a wide range of topics that involve the use of probability to solve problems in engineering design and research. Although it is relevant for a wide range of disciplines, it draws heavily on the fields of civil engineering, environmental engineering and the geosciences. Specific topics include risk analysis, probabilistic design, reliability-based design (component and system reliability). Future versions of this book will include additional applications of probability theory related to continuous distributions, extreme value analysis and expanded chapters on component and system reliability. A number of practical examples and exercises are included, both analytic and numerical, some of which use an interactive feature that allows Python code to be used in the web browser without any additional software installation.

Water: A Dutch Cultural History

Translated by Nancy Forest-Flier To order a paper copy of this book, please follow this link: https://www.boekenbestellen.nl/boek/water Floods are a fundamental part of Dutch history. Indeed, having ‘tamed’ the threats associated with living below sea level is part of Dutch national identity. In the cultural depictions of these devastating events, however, national pride at a certain collective resilience goes hand-in-hand with the collective trauma of exposed vulnerability. All too often, the Dutch were the losers in these battles against the elements. In a time of rising global sea levels, cultural scholar Lotte Jensen dives into the stories and images of the past to unpack this paradox for today. Over the centuries, large parts of the Netherlands have been progressively reclaimed from its river delta home. Throughout that process, the country suffered countless floods, a number of which were truly catastrophic, such as the Saint Elizabeth’s Flood of 1421 or the North Sea Flood of 1953. Jensen describes how the Dutch have dealt with these disasters, in practice but also in the imagination. It is the story of babies in floating cradles, fatherly monarchs, community fundraisers, and the boy who stuck his finger in the dike. Centuries before the nation-building associated with the 1800s, the Dutch created a unifying ‘us’ – the image of the Dutch lion – against a ‘them’ – the ‘waterwolf’, the major threat which water embodied. This national feeling and narrative were crafted with a set repertoire of images; role models (heroes and monarchs); charity (national and international solidarity); and a culture of remembrance. Jensen gives particular attention to the at times funny poems, books and songs, later criticized as clichéd or melodramatic, which these collective traumas inspired. She also demonstrates through monuments and works of art how this narrative has multiplied and acquired variations with time right up to the present. Though once cast in a more religious light – the flood as punishment for a general lack of religious devotion – the waterwolf has become, for example, a collective responsibility for the environment that begins with lifestyle choices. Today the Netherlands lives with water more than it battles it, some thinkers even envisioning an ‘amphibian’ future for the country. The stories and images of the past, however, reveal that precisely vulnerability can be fertile ground for solidarity and togetherness. With rising sea levels representing a growing threat, this well-researched and highly readable cultural history shows how over time a culture’s imagination can gain new relevance beyond its borders. Acknowledging and building from a place of collective vulnerability might now be more important than ever.

Coastal Dynamics

This textbook on Coastal Dynamics focuses on the interrelation between physical wave, flow and sediment transport phenomena and the resulting morphodynamics of a wide variety of coastal systems. The textbook is unique in that it explicitly connects the dynamics of open coasts and tidal basins; not only is the interaction between open coasts and tidal basins of basic importance for the evolution of most coastal systems, but describing the similarities between their physical processes is highly instructive as well. This textbook emphasizes these similarities to the benefit of understanding shared processes such as nonlinearities in flow and sediment transport. Some prior knowledge with respect to the dynamics of flow, waves and sediment transport is recommended.
