Manual QGIS for fieldwork

Instructions for students to use aerial photos, Google Earth and QGIS to explore their fieldwork area prior to their field trip. This material was designed for first-year undergraduate Earth Sciences students, in preparation to a fieldwork in the French Alps. The fieldwork and this guide focuses on understanding the geology and geomorphology.

Virtual sea-going marine science fieldwork with VirtualShip

Marine science relies heavily on fieldwork at and in the ocean for data collection. Consequently, marine science students need training in sea-going fieldwork. However, such training is expensive, logistically demanding, and environmentally burdensome because research vessels emit substantial amounts of CO₂. To provide students with an opportunity to experience the realities of working at sea, we developed a platform for virtual oceanic fieldwork: the VirtualShip Classroom, which provides Python code, exercises, and 360 videos as virtual reality (VR) covering different aspects of fieldwork such as expedition planning, sampling, and data analysis. Whenever possible, students work with authentic tools and realistic datasets, such as the Marine Facilities Planning platform for designing research expeditions. Basic programming skills are advantageous, particularly when students analyze self-collected data. Students formulate their own research question in a region of the global ocean of their choice. They then investigate this question with a virtual research vessel operated through the bespoke VirtualShip software. Instruments currently implemented for deployment or onboard use are ADCP, CTD, XBT, Argo floats, surface drifters, and underway temperature and salinity sensors. This collection of teaching materials is accompanied by a suggested workflow, which outlines a series of classes on virtual ocean research.

e-module measurement uncertainly

Short course module with fieldwork component aimed to teach the effects of spatial variability on the uncertainty of measurements of an environmental variable and to teach to apply different methods of soil moisture measurement. This module consist of the following: theoretical background / preparation (e-module with e-lectures), fieldwork (field measurement and soil sampling), laboratory work (sample processing), and reporting. The fieldwork will take about 4 hours to complete and the lab work on the next working day about one to two hours. The set of teaching materials consist of a set of videos, the assignment and a blackboard module. Furthermore, an evaluation of this module at Utrecht University is provided (in Dutch).

Come to Your Senses

Seeing, tasting, smelling, hearing, feeling. After early education, sensory skills are rarely trained directly, but most professionals naturally develop them with practice. Come to Your Senses provides direct exercises that will help sharpen your and your students’ senses so that they can utilize them in their professional and personal lives. Senses-based learning is a pedagogical methodology that focuses on exploring and developing sensory awareness and skills, and critically reflecting on their importance in education, research and professional practice. Based on the research carried out at Maastricht University between 2021 and 2024, Emilie Sitzia, Elene Kadagidze and Tânia A. Cardoso show how to use your senses in a fun, visual manner. From Cookie Explosions and Visual Journalism to Sensory Mapping, with unique exercises different experts this guide demonstrates how to implement senses-based learning in your classes or everyday life. This open textbook functions as a manual on how to implement senses-based learning within and outside academia. Come to Your Senses re-balances and reasserts the importance of sensory skills in tertiary education and professional practice through interventions in the existing curriculum in the form of designed learning units, learning resources and activities.

Let’s Talk Some Sense Into You

What do all researchers have in common? They are expert observers. Their work involves attuning and developing their skills of observation, sharpening their senses. Observation is a skill that is central to any successful fieldwork and yet it often gets taken for granted and not given specific attention. This workshop (2 sessions) builds on the observation (ethnographic) method the students have been introduced to and attends to train (all) their senses to help them become better observers. Learning objectives: This workshop aims to help the students engage critically with how to train their senses to experience/ perceive more fully and collect information relevant to their projects. It will train them to describe and communicate sensory information clearly and precisely and understand how to analyse it using various (inter)disciplinary protocols. After this workshop the students will understand the importance of sensory data in research and are able to collect and use it to think about their own topic and feed their research process.
