The Medieval Podcast | Mary Magdalene on Stage with Joanne Findon

In the medieval world, people interacted with Biblical history and the adventures of their favourite saints in all sorts of ways - including through plays. One of the most beloved saints - Mary Magdalene - is the main character in an English play that has it all: raging tyrants, perilous sea voyages, angelic interventions, at least three resurrections, and perhaps most thrilling of all, a woman preaching. This week, Daniele speaks with Joanne Findon about the incredible medieval story of what happened to Mary Magdalene after the resurrection, how even the most holy figures were brought to the stage, and why thi play may have been rescued from destruction. Water-Filled Glass as a Heat Displacement System for Saving Energy in Buildings

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Brandon Mok introduces Water-filled Glass (WFG), a technology that replaces the gas in an Insulating Glass Unit (IGU) with a water layer connected to a mechanical system with a heat exchanger and pump. The core function is to manage a building's energy demand by controlling the water temperature to optimize the glass surface temperature, thereby reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling. Studies show WFG can provide 47-72% better energy savings than double glazing and 34-61% better than triple glazing. The presentation further explores a novel concept called SEED (Saving Energy through Energy Distribution), which uses the WFG system to redistribute heat from building facades requiring cooling to those requiring heating simultaneously. A preliminary simulation for office buildings in London and New York showed that WFG alone achieved 58-72% energy savings, with the SEED concept providing an additional 10-13% in savings by balancing energy demands across different orientations. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Brandon Mok for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. The Rest Is History | 587. Mary, Queen of Scots: Murder Most Foul (Part 4)

Why did Mary Queen of Scots’ second marriage to the volatile Lord Darnley threaten to send Scotland into civil war? In what way did she essentially declare war upon her powerful cousin, Elizabeth I? Who was the hotheaded James Hepburn, the Earl of Bothwell, and why would he come to play such a devastating role in Mary’s life? Could Mary survive unburnt if the religious tensions smouldering at the heart of Scotland, erupted into a bonfire of destruction? Why did she personally lead a Scottish army into battle, pistols in hand? And, who in her inner circle was brutally murdered before her very eyes? Join Tom and Dominic as they discuss the climax of Mary Queen of Scots’ dysfunctional marriage, her efforts to seize power in both Scotland and England, and the birth of her heir, whose very existence threatened the reign of England’s Virgin Queen? Playing Perspectives - a game design toolkit

Students collectively design a game on a polarizing topic and are stimulated to explore and gain a deeper understanding of various perspectives and presuppositions (including their own), recognize rhetorical narratives and frames, and devise strategies to overcome these. Students adopt active listening skills when conversing with one another. Playing Perspectives is based on game-based and transformative learning principles. Playing Perspectives consists of three phases. These can be conducted consecutively or separate from one another as stand alone activities, depending on the time available, your learning objectives and the desire to have a playable game as end product. The materials that are developed by students in each of these phases can be uploaded onto Edusources and used by other teachers if they only want to conduct one of the later phases as stand alone activity. Playing Perspectives was developed as part of the Utrecht University Comenius project Fostering an Open Mind and Open Attitude in Higher Education that strives to stimulate perspective taking and dialogue in academic education with creative learning activities. The other learning activities that have been developed as part of the Open Minds project are the Open Mind digital game and The Square (Het Vlak; a creative dialogue methodology). Please note: the photos required for phase 1 can be downloaded from the Teaching & Learning Collection of the UU (see links).

PFAS – Persistent Micropollutants in the Water Cycle

This report presents the final course material that was developed for the online learning module on persistent micropollutants – PFAS. The document can be used as a stand-alone manual to fully individually follow the entire course, from week to week. It includes the links to the video materials that were developed for the course within the project, fully integrated within the reading material. The course forms a bridge between scientists and professionals working in the water cycle. So far, the information on PFAS has been available in a scattered manner, making it difficult for non-experts to get a complete introductory overview. This course was designed to compile information on PFAS through the water cycle, from production to use and final treatment. The course is built up in an intuitive way: it starts with a general introduction on the origin, chemistry and nomenclature of PFAS; national standards and reported concentrations in the urban water cycle are presented; analytics are explained; the course concludes with technologies for separation and final destruction of PFAS. Each chapter (or week) contains written textbook material, videos and additional reading material. Development of the course has been a co-production between PROMISCES and TU Delft, as TU Delft has an extensive educational support system including a professional recording studio and an expert learning assessment system for engineering education. All materials including videos are freely available for the general public. If the learner wants the full experience of having virtual classmates, get access to all exercises and receive a certificate and credit points after successful completion of the course, one can register at online-learning.tudelft.nl. The course was developed by two environmental engineers with a professional educational background (Mariska Ronteltap and Kim Lompe). The educational videos include knowledge clips (recorded lectures in a studio), videos in laboratories, interviews with PROMISCES project partners and videos on location. To be able to follow the course a basic understanding of chemistry is required; other than that, the course is fully understandable for non-experts. Collaboration between TU Delft, Delfland Water Authority, and the EU Project PROMISCES.

The Rest Is History | 423. Carthage vs. Rome: The Wolf at the Gates (Part 3)

“Every man is the architect of his own destiny” Long before Rome reigned over the Mediterranean, there was Carthage: the supreme predator of Antiquity. But how did Rome rise to become one of the most ruthless powers of all time, united in cold, disciplined violence? And what was it about the Roman people that made them the greatest threat Carthage would ever face? Whilst the Carthaginians depended upon foreign mercenaries, Rome’s legions were formed of Romans, all committed to protecting and furthering the interests of Rome. And unlike anyone before, the Roman people shared a collective sense of destiny, with Roman citizenship generously offered to all conquered peoples. But following the Sack of Rome by Gauls in 390 BC, the Romans would become even more ruthless, disciplined and bent on total victory… Join Tom and Dominic as they discuss the rise of Rome, history’s most famous superpower. By 285 BC her dominion of Italy was almost complete. Only one thing stood in her way: the formidable military leader Pyrrhus. He alone foresaw the destruction to come, and the “beautiful killing ground” that would emerge when, ten years later, Rome and Carthage would finally go to war… Producer: Theo Young-Smith Assistant Producer: Tabby Syrett Executive Producers: Jack Davenport + Tony Pastor
