Before the storm

This game is inspired by ‘Apples to Apples’. It has been modified by the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, with support from Extra Ludic. Before the Storm is a decision-making game designed to introduce the weather forecasts and possible actions to take against natural disasters through different roles. The object of the game is to win the most rounds by playing an action card from one's hand to best "match" that round's communal forecast card as chosen by that round's judging player.

Save the city: Maputo Resilience Game

This game models how Maputo responds to shocks and stresses and strives to increase its resilience from 2020 through 2050. There are four subsystems in the game: agriculture, health care, society and culture, and infrastructure. Each subsystem represents an important part of the city and should try to increase their resilience through developing and maintaining adaptation measures. Each measure has a different effect on the resilience of a subsystem. There are a range of shocks and stresses that can disrupt the city. The game takes time, the government’s budget, probability, and cooperation into account to represent some of the complex factors at play real world.

Typhoons in Manila

Metropolitan Manila is a highly populated area and lies in the most-active tropical cyclone basin in the world. Tropical cyclones (or typhoons) are strong cyclonic storms that develop over warm ocean waters and when moving across coastal regions can bring immense damage to coastal cities. This report investigates the cascading effects typhoons have had in the past on Metro Manila and looks into possible solution strategies to strengthen the resilience of the urban area. Poverty is one of the most prevalent issues in Manila. Because of improper housing options and poor infrastructure, low-income communities are forced to live in flood-prone areas and therefore highly vulnerable to disaster events that are accompanied by flooding or storm surges. Informal settlements are the part of the urban system most affected by typhoons and in special need for attention in mitigation work. Proposed solution strategies include improvements in urban drainage, inclusive relocation plans, livelihood assistance and capacity building programs, weak solid waste management practices and rehabilitation of the wetland ecosystem.

Water Hygiene in Maputo, Mozambique

The report looks into the problem of water hygiene in Maputo considering the effect of climate change and summarizes the potential solutions. The report is composed of six parts. The first part of the report describes the three main problems which are shortage and contamination of drinking water, failure of groundwater systems, and poor waste management. This part also discusses how climate change may exacerbate the problems. The second part summarizes the strategies proposed or being implemented by Mozambique’s government or international organizations. These mainly include constructing reservoirs and drainages, strengthening sanitary facilities, and enhancing resistance to cyclones. The third part provides some critical further literature to deeply understand Maputo’s adaptation and mitigation strategies. The fourth part asks five questions that readers can answer after reading this report while the fifth part provides the answers giving by the author. The sixth part challenges the readers with three more questions that intend to spark discussion among them.

Clip7b Atmospheric Dynamics

In this clip I will illustrate the theory of juice trophic motion by using the example of curved isobars We will also examine the theory of circular motion and learn how to derive the gradient wind relationships. The clip relates to the course Introduction Atmosphere (MAQ-10306; https://ssc.wur.nl/Handbook/Course/MAQ-10306).
