Beyond Google Scholar

Students often struggle to find relevant literature for their thesis projects. The main aim of this tutorial is two-fold, namely to teach students (1) how to find relevant literature using various databases and search strategies and (2) how to critically reflect on the role of digital databases and Generative AI tools in their search process. The package includes a lecturer’s manual and two versions of the same tutorial: one with steps in Excel and one without. The tutorial can be delivered as an in-class workshop (2–3 hours) or assigned as a take-home assignment. The databases and tools used in this tutorial include Zotero, Google Scholar, Project MUSE, JSTOR, ChatGPT, and Excel. The tutorial can be used in any higher education classroom and is particularly suitable for courses that prepare students for writing a BA or MA thesis.

Data Analysis and visualization BML

Learning Outcomes You can explain the fundamental concepts of data, including data types, data structures, and the importance of data quality, and you can apply these concepts in the context of both Excel and R. You can import data from various sources (such as CSV, TXT, Excel files) into both Excel and R, and you are able to select the appropriate methods and functions for different data formats and structures. You can clean and prepare data for analysis in both Excel and R by applying techniques for identifying and handling missing values, outliers, inconsistencies, and duplicates. You can apply and interpret various data analysis functions in both Excel and R, including determining minimum and maximum values, calculating percentiles, selecting specific data based on criteria, applying conditional formatting to visually identify patterns, and sorting data to gain insights. You can create effective data visualizations in both Excel and R (such as bar charts, line charts, pie charts, and box plots) to communicate patterns, trends, and relationships in data, and you can customize the visualizations for a clear and purpose-driven presentation. Duration: 18 lessons (5EC).

Reusing Post-consumer Insulating Glass Units (IGUs)

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Jolanda Tetteroo, from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, discusses innovative approaches to reusing flat glass from post-consumer insulating glass units (IGUs). Motivated by the high energy input and virgin material demands of flat glass production, the research explores how reclaimed glass can be upgraded or directly reused in new façade applications. Initial efforts focused on assessing IGU quality in existing buildings, followed by the development of numerous upgrade strategies. The most promising result is a 50% circular IGU combining reused and new materials. Ongoing research aims to extend reuse to tempered, laminated, and coated glass, with support from industry partners and TU Delft. This work contributes to a higher level of circularity in construction materials and offers a valuable blueprint for sustainable glazing practices. For further details, please refer to the linked publication. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Jolanda Tetteroo for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Scientific integrity and Open science in level 1 courses at UCU

At University College Utrecht, we teach about scientific integrity and open science as early as the first methodology course the students take. In this powerpoint, there's a small collection of materials that can be used in an English-taught program to provide a starting point to educate students on these topics.

Façade EPD

In this lecture, Janneke Verker-Evers, Sustainability Leader at Scheldebouw (Permasteelisa Group), discusses the environmental impact of customised façades and the process of creating Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Learners will gain insight into the challenges of compiling a lifecycle analysis for unitised façades, considering factors like material types, manufacturing processes, transportation, and installation. The lecture also covers how Permasteelisa Group uses early-stage EPDs to optimize façade designs by reducing materials, comparing options, and selecting low-carbon suppliers. The focus is on improving embodied carbon in future designs by making informed decisions from the outset of a project. Additionally, the EPD for the Curtain Wall FT01A of the "n2" building in London is available as supplementary material at the link shared below. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project, in collaboration with Permasteelisa Group and the NewMedia Centre at TU Delft. The creation of these resources has been (partially) funded by the ERASMUS+ grant program of the European Union under grant no. 2022-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000089750. Libguide Reference Management

Reference management is systematically collecting and organising concrete sources and/or the bibliographic data ('references') of sources, usually to (re)use them at a later time. Reference management tools help you in collecting and organising references. Good reference management results in a more effective and efficient workflow. This libguide covers three reference management tools: EndNote, Zotero and Mendeley.
