A conversation with Christopher Bonura (Mount St. Mary's University) about the apocalyptic tradition of identifying the Four Kingdoms prophesied in the Book of Daniel. Which one was the Roman empire? The fourth, scheduled to fall with the others, or something that came afterward (a tradition sometimes called imperial eschatology)? Among other topics we discuss Eusebios of Caesarea and the reign of Herakleios as possible turning points in this tradition. Christopher has published a monograph on one of the most important of these texts: A Prophecy of Empire: The Apocalypse of Pseudo-Methodius from Late Antique Mesopotamia to the Global Medieval Imagination (University of California Press 2025), though our discussion focuses more on two articles, 'Eusebius of Caesarea, the Roman Empire, and the Fulfillment of Biblical Prophecy,' Church History 90 (2021) 509-536; and 'Eschatology and Apocalypticism in the Age of Heraclius,' forthcoming.

In this learning activity, students reflect on their position within the research process. They explore how their identity, experiences, and disciplinary background shape their perspective and translate this into a short positionality statement. The activity centers around the question 'Who Am I?'. The assignment fosters critical thinking, self-awareness, and interdisciplinary awareness.

Students often struggle to find relevant literature for their thesis projects. The main aim of this tutorial is two-fold, namely to teach students (1) how to find relevant literature using various databases and search strategies and (2) how to critically reflect on the role of digital databases and Generative AI tools in their search process. The package includes a lecturer’s manual and two versions of the same tutorial: one with steps in Excel and one without. The tutorial can be delivered as an in-class workshop (2–3 hours) or assigned as a take-home assignment. The databases and tools used in this tutorial include Zotero, Google Scholar, Project MUSE, JSTOR, ChatGPT, and Excel. The tutorial can be used in any higher education classroom and is particularly suitable for courses that prepare students for writing a BA or MA thesis.

Agent-based modelling (ABM) is one of the most widely applied computational modelling research techniques in archaeology, because it is well suited to the questions asked by archaeologists. However, the access to vocational training for ABM is limited. In this paper we present the Open Educational Resources (OER) that we produced in an international cooperation. For this purpose, we created online and open tutorials for ABM for archaeologists. In addition, how-to guides and support material were created, both for teachers and students. The materials adhere to international (European) standards in relation to education and the Digital Skills Passport for archaeology. The teaching materials have been well tested using a diverse group of archaeologists during various international conferences and meetings. It was shown that the knowledge and skills of the participants in relation to ABM improved. In addition, the demand for the teaching materials and the workshops was high, ensuring that the tutorials on ABM will be used in the future.

Models of Authority is a joint research project by University of Glasgow, University of Cambridge, and King’s College, London. The project has brought together digital images of over 90 charters of particular import for the creation of Scottish government during the period 1100CE to 1250CE. The charters are held by a variety of institutions across the United Kingdom. Models of Authority’s platform allows users to tag and annotate the images of charters and many of them have scores of annotations crowdsourced by users. The project uses Lightbox to allow users to save and annotate their own images of the charters and then save them for personal use or add their own annotations to the documents. Beyond providing images, descriptions, and links to the holding repository, the project also has a blog and articles written by project researchers. The platform is free to use, but image copyrights belong to institution in possession of the charter.
