Inzicht

Integrated Infrastructure Design Guide

Infrastructure forms the backbone of our society – from roads and railways to waterworks and ports – as critical part of vital systems for mobility, water and space. But that backbone is under strain. Ageing systems, climate change and scarce resources force us to rethink fundamentally how we design, use and value infrastructure. This Design Guide starts with one urgent question: how can we make infrastructure future-proof in a world of uncertainty? It introduces integrated approaches in which design, engineering, policy and societal value come together through a wide range of inspiring examples related to urban and regional accessibility and development, spatial quality, flood protection, and ecological restoration. The book demonstrates how infrastructure can be more than merely a functional system. It becomes a driver of societal value and prosperity, and a strategic instrument that connects quality of life, sustainability and economic development. This Design Guide offers a clear conceptual framework to understand and design infrastructure that is not only more efficient, but also more sustainable, inclusive and meaningful. Drawn from thematical insights and lessons, and applicable methods, techniques and strategies by a broad range of scientists and professionals of practice with a background architecture, urban development and design, landscape architecture, civil engineering, economics, governance or policy. A substantial and indispensable guide for designers, engineers and policymakers committed to shaping the infrastructure and the society of tomorrow.

The Evolution of Structural Glass Design

In this video, James O'Callaghan traces structural glass from its emergence in the mid‑1990s as a substitute for wood and steel through to its use in the present day. Glass offers unique transparency, strength, and stiffness, making it suitable for beams, floors, and columns. However, its purely elastic behavior provides no warning before failure. Key challenges center mainly on connections, where failure can occur without visible signs of overstress. Because bolted connections create such problematic local stresses, novel inserted connections were developed to preserve transparency and improve structural efficiency . Realised projects include Apple's Fifth Avenue cube (2006 and 2011), Zorlu in Istanbul, and the Steve Jobs Theater. Lastly, James O'Callaghan advises future engineers to approach glass with curiosity, not limiting it to windows or structural roles, but exploring its full potential. Despite its embodied carbon, glass remains vital for connecting people to light and the outdoors. Its future depends on fresh, naive eyes that ask what glass can do, not what it has done. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to James O'Callaghan for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. The Origins of Structural Gass design

In this video, Tim Macfarlane, a structural engineer in London, traces structural glass from its hesitant beginnings in 1989 to its role in contemporary architecture. Glass is unique not because it is new, but because of its magical simplicity: a thin sheet that keeps weather out while connecting inside to outside. Through constant innovation, glass has undergone numerous processes such as lamination, toughening, or coatings that, while improving performance, also reduce reusability and raise environmental questions about whether large, complex glass is truly sensible. Early projects with architects Eva Jiřičná and Rick Mather forced Tim to question fundamental issues the industry had not addressed: how strong glass really is, how to calculate it, and how to make it safe, information once treated as private intellectual property. His role became one of moral integrity, negotiating between market pressures and client ambitions. Tim advises young engineers to keep an open mind, love life, and have fun with curiosity. True intelligence comes from within, not from AI. The journey of asking questions and fulfilling yourself as a human being is what matters. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. The Refurbishment of Channel 4

In this video, Peter van de Rotten describes in detail the refurbishment of a 1990s high-tech glass facade at Channel 4's headquarters in London. The original design used a double-curved cable net with point-fixed suspended glass panels. Over time serious safety issues emerged, namely damaged glass and fixings displaced by up to 50mm which threatened sudden energy release and possible collapse. To safely disassemble the facade, the team introduced a third load path, supporting each glass panel from the top steel crown, and designed special clamps to secure cable fixings. The disassembly was carried out in a carefully controlled sequence to safely remove and replace the different elements and components. Key challenges included extremely tight tolerances (down to 20 micrometers), mixing old and new materials, and avoiding stress around glass holes. The team chose to preserve the original facade shape to prevent unpredictable behavior. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Peter van de Rotten for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. ACA-bot

ACA-bot is an engaging chatbot designed for Automated Conversational Assessment (ACA). Drawing inspiration from traditional oral exams, this text-based conversational agent transforms assessment into a dynamic learning experience. It supports both formative and summative evaluation by offering students personalised feedback and guidance at every step of their learning journey. The first ACA-bot prototype focuses on assessing students’ understanding of basic statistical concepts, but its flexible design allows for easy adaptation to a wide range of subjects and learning contexts. Through interactive dialogue, students can practise explaining ideas clearly under exam-like conditions, apply their knowledge to new and challenging questions, and refine their reasoning as they respond to follow-up prompts. They gain valuable insights into their own understanding, identify areas for improvement, and gradually build confidence for both oral and written assessments. For educators, ACA-bot offers a powerful way to scale oral examinations and enhance formative assessment without increasing workload. It automates parts of the assessment process, provides structured and actionable insights into student performance, and opens the door to more personal, interactive feedback at scale. By combining the strengths of conversational AI and educational assessment, ACA-bot turns evaluation into a collaborative, insightful process. It empowers students to think aloud, reason more effectively, and grow, while giving educators a smarter, more innovative way to understand and support learning. ShareXR : Challenge-Based Learning with XR (BMS Lab, University of Twente)

ShareXR introduces a challenge-based learning (CBL) approach for integrating research, design, and development in engineering education through extended reality (XR). Developed at the University of Twente’s BMS Lab, the model addresses the increasing need for multidisciplinary collaboration by teaching students to speak a shared language across research, design, and technical development. Even for those without an engineering, scientific or STEM background. This course offers a hands-on, multidisciplinary learning experience where students take real research ideas and transform them into innovation projects within a complete and validated open learning XR ecosystem. With reusable multimedia course content, the course enables students to understand interdisciplinary collaboration, while each module focuses on one of the four pillars: Research, Design, Development, and Project Management — guided by principles of balance, iteration, and collaboration. By working with different tools like one-page project canvases, students will learn how to translate research ideas into structured user stories, requirements, and project management tasks, while exploring how XR tools can act as a human-centered medium for prototyping, testing, and validating ideas without requiring coding skills.

Novel Switchable Glazing Assemblies for Privacy & Glare Control in a Mediterranean Climate

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Etienne Magri details a research study investigating the combination of PDLC and SPD adaptive glazing technologies to enhance glare control in buildings, using Malta's subtropical climate as a case study. The project involved testing individual and combined laminates within a scale model, evaluating visual appearance and glare using DGP metrics. Results demonstrated that the combined technologies achieved near-complete blackout, effectively eliminating solar glare while maintaining privacy, and successfully transformed static facades into dynamic systems with adjustable transparency. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Etienne Magri for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection.
