Workshop Publishing Open Educational Resources

In this interactive workshop, participants learn how to adapt educational resources, so they can be shared online. After the training, the participant will know: 1) what requirements open educational resources should meet; 2) how to avoid infringing copyright; 3) what Creative Commons licences are and how to use them for your own OERs; 4) how to find copyright-free images; 5) how to share material on Edusources. The slides are the main resource. The other assignments are integrated in the slides, and can also be used as stand-alone assignments.

Instructor Course Packs by the open textbook "Introduction to Criminology: An Equity Lens"

This course for advanced undergraduate students was designed to be taught as an online course with no synchronous meetings over a 10 week term at Western Oregon University. Included in this course are major ancillary materials: In addition to the OER Text, Instructor used lecture slide decks (not included) discussions, journals, Flippity columns, and an optional study guide via crossword puzzle. List all course-level learning outcomes. Identify the various categories and typologies of crime and explain how crime rates are recorded. Understand how methods of measuring crime rates impact the ability of researchers to analyze and understand how crime disproportionately impacts various groups. Identify key criminological theories (and identify the theorists and researchers commonly associated with those theories) and their policy implications. Demonstrate the ability to apply criminological theories in real-world contexts (e.g., make connections between real-world experiences/observations and the ideas presented by criminological theorists). Instructor Materials Syllabus Instructor Guide Course Map Week 1: Discussion #1 - Ridiculous Crimes Week 1: Journal #1 - Criminology Week 2: Discussion #2 - Criminology Cartoon Compare & Contrast Week 3: Discussion #3 - Social Media Week 3: Journal #2 - Case Breakdown Week 4: Journal #3 - Biological Theories Week 5: Discussion #4 - Case Breakdown Week 5: Assignment #1 - Life-Course Disruption Week 6: Journal #4 - Moral Panics Week 7: Assignment #2 - Choose Your Adventure Week 8: Journal #5 - Story of a Criminal Week 9: Journal #6 - Violent Crime Reduction Week 10: Journal #7 - Media Analysis

Generative AI Tutorials for Students and Teachers

As part of our commitment to innovation in research and education, the Graduate School of Life Sciences (GSLS) at University Medical Centre Utrecht has begun integrating the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) into our educational framework. We recognise the growing influence of LLMs in academic research and education. To ensure that our graduates and staff can effectively navigate and utilise these tools, we have developed a tutorial designed to provide both the technical knowledge and ethical framework necessary for responsible use.

How to design open inquiry labs

In this article we show how student “open inquiries” in undergraduate labs can be powerful teaching and assessment methods. In such open inquiries it is the students who define the question they want to answer, formulate the hypothesis, search for information, design and carry out experiments to reach their goal, and share their ideas, needs, and results with others. This student agency afforded by open inquiry trains critical thinking, teaches students to learn from failure, and requires effective science communication in authentic contexts. Adapting open inquiry methods for the first time can be especially daunting for instructors who have no examples to draw upon. To address this challenge we explain the findings of a diverse group of five lab instructors and an educational researcher who have compared open inquiry practices in different contexts. As a group, we formed a Community of Practice dedicated to “Supporting students’ scientific Open Inquiries in Labs” (aka SssOIL). The commonalities across our diverse project team suggest some defining features and best practices. By sharing our findings and example course designs and materials, we hope to aid instructors in adapting more open inquiry teaching methods in their own lab courses. Any questions about this article can be addressed to Forrest via: forrestbradbury@gmail.com or to our team via: S3OIL@outlook.com
