The Index of Medieval Art

The Index of Medieval Art houses, contextualizes, and presents images and information relating to the iconographic traditions of the medieval world. Founded in 1917 and maintained by a specialized staff of art historians, it serves iconographic researchers through both its physical archive on the Princeton University campus and an expanding online database. Its ongoing program of conferences and publications provides opportunities for continuing scholarly and public discourse about the visual culture of the Middle Ages. Once a subscription service, the online database has been freely available to the public since 2023. Online holdings comprise 177, 306 (to date) online records of works of art from early apostolic times to ca. 1600. While western European and Byzantine Christian art remain most heavily represented, secular, Jewish, and Islamic art is also being added.

Workshop Recognition and Rewards

The interactive workshop Recognition and Rewards focuses on the impact of recognition and rewards on the choices made within research regarding Open Science principles. It is notable that, in the current system, Open Science-related tasks receive less recognition and appreciation than 'traditional' research tasks. The workshop demonstrates how the societal impact of research can change through a cultural shift regarding recognition and rewards for Open Science tasks.

Lateral Load Resistance of Glass Pane According to EN 16612

In this video, Martina Eliášová introduces the European standard EN 16612 for determining the lateral load resistance of glass panes used as infill panels in windows and facades. The standard provides design procedures for monolithic, laminated, or insulated glass that is simply supported around its edges and subjected to uniform loads like wind or thermal stress. The design follows the limit state method, which includes checking the Ultimate Limit State (to prevent collapse by ensuring design tensile stress is less than the design glass strength) and the Serviceability Limit State (to control deformation). A key aspect is the use of partial safety factors, where design loads are increased and material strengths are reduced. The design bending strength of glass is significantly influenced by the load duration (through the Kmod factor), the edge condition (Ke factor), and the glass surface profile (Ksp factor), with specific characteristic strength values and adjustment factors provided for different glass types like annealed and pre-stressed glass. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Martina Eliášová for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. The creation of these resources has been (partially) funded by the ERASMUS+ grant program of the European Union under grant no. 2022-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000089750. Responsible Anticipation and Visioneering

This exercise targets the development of students' capacities to critically analyze existing technological visions and enables them to create their own responsible socio-technical visions. Through group work and discussions, students examine technological promises embedded in anticipation discourses, uncover hidden values and assumptions, and develop alternative narratives that can guide engineering practice and policy decisions

A virtual research cruise to characterise the North Sea water system

In this assignment you will learn to set up your own virtual research cruise, during which you will ‘measure’ biophysical oceanographic properties and analyse them. The ocean is not an easy place to perform measurements. It covers a vast area, is not always easy to access (think about the deep ocean), and measuring comes with obstacles. We’re bound by shiptime (which is expensive), the types of instruments that are available (they may break), the weather (storms), sea-ice, seasickness… As research cruises are time consuming and costly, it is important to plan very well. One tool that can help scientists in planning their cruise is VirtualShip. In this assignment, you will use VirtualShip and design a measurement campaign in the North-West European Shelf region, aimed at measuring a cross-section from the open ocean, via the North Sea, towards the coast of Zeeland in the south-west of the Netherlands. Included is a rubric for grading the student reports.

Collage-making for self-discovery in engineering ethics

This creative exercise enables students to discover, reflect and express their emotions in relation to engineering. In this way, the exercise enables self-understanding through an encounter with one’s own feelings and intuitions and serves as a starting point for better ethical deliberation and well-being. Learning goals: • Expanding moral sensibility (being aware of their own emotions, values and norms) • Stimulating moral creativity and imagination
