Game Development with Students

The project Game Development with Students introduces interested educators to an innovative teaching tool with practical insights from the international relations classroom. Game development with students is a specialized form of game-based and project-based learning. It incentivizes both student creativity and in-class student-teacher co-creation and enables a particularly participative and result-oriented approach to the subject matter. The method is thematically flexible enough to travel across different fields of study and is adaptable to different levels of complexity. To enable other educators to implement this innovative teaching tool, we develop instructional materials (an educators handbook as well as educational videos), providing both general information on the experiential, game-based learning theory undergirding the method as well as practical, hands-on tips and trick on how to implement it in different educational settings. In doing so, we address the important, interconnected educational challenges of the transferability and sustainability of teacher developed tools.

The dual challenge from AI and cognitive science

This lecture offers a theoretical framework for analysing the ways in which insights about human and artificial cognition challenge existing legal (reasoning) practices. It briefly touches on possible pathways to address these challenges as well. The lecture is part of project RECOGNISE. RECOGNISE aims at developing an interdisciplinary training curriculum on legal reasoning and cognitive science, filling a gap in legal higher education. It is a strategic partnership of six European universities for higher education sponsored by the ERASMUS+ Programme. The project will provide the interested learners (legal researchers, law students, legal practitioners, and beyond) with introductory and advanced materials on topics including heuristics and biases in adjudication, cognitive structure of legal concepts, and defeasible reasoning in law. Materials will be provided in the form of an online handbook, video lectures, summer schools, and other online and on-campus activities.

The European Experience

The European Experience brings together the expertise of nearly a hundred historians from eight European universities to internationalise and diversify the study of modern European history, exploring a grand sweep of time from 1500 to 2000. Offering a valuable corrective to the Anglocentric narratives of previous English-language textbooks, scholars from all over Europe have pooled their knowledge on comparative themes such as identities, cultural encounters, power and citizenship, and economic development to reflect the complexity and heterogeneous nature of the European experience. Rather than another grand narrative, the international author teams offer a multifaceted and rich perspective on the history of the continent of the past 500 years. Each major theme is dissected through three chronological sub-chapters, revealing how major social, political and historical trends manifested themselves in different European settings during the early modern (1500–1800), modern (1800–1900) and contemporary period (1900–2000). This resource is of utmost relevance to today’s history students in the light of ongoing internationalisation strategies for higher education curricula, as it delivers one of the first multi-perspective and truly ‘European’ analyses of the continent’s past. Beyond the provision of historical content, this textbook equips students with the intellectual tools to interrogate prevailing accounts of European history, and enables them to seek out additional perspectives in a bid to further enrich the discipline.

Designing an Irresponsible Innovation - Teacher Version

What would an “irresponsible innovation” look like, and how can this reveal values at stake in a given project as well as targets for intervention? This is a short and creative group work exercise targeted at surfacing values as related to a specific technology, case, or project. Ideal to use in support of an existing assignment (e.g., essay), after topics have been chosen.

The Ethics Game

The idea of this game is that, in a relatively short time, you will discuss a range of ethical problem cases, and review different types of ethical argument: consequence-based, duty/rights-based and character-based. Students play this game in groups of approximately 4 around the ‘board’ below.

Moral Imagination and the Future of Cities at Night (Teacher version)

Nighttime lighting is foundational to the design and use of cities at night, and new innovations to how we light cities can have far-reaching effects on social and environmental values. Given the confluence of rising concerns about the negative effects of artificial light at night (known as light pollution), combined with the introduction of new lighting technologies (e.g., smart systems, LEDs) as well as the development of other disruptive technologies (e.g., autonomous vehicles), we have a rare opportunity to envision and enact new lighting strategies. But how can these new technologies be adopted and utilized in a creative and responsible way? What values (environmental, social, aesthetic) should inform and drive technological innovation, design and policy choices, and use patterns? In this exercise, students are asked to confront complex and open-ended moral questions related to a critical (if often taken-for-granted) urban infrastructure, exploring how normative theories and value-sensitive design can – and should – inform the future of nighttime lighting.
