The Politics of Theatre, pt. 2 with Dirk Visser | In a Nutshell

How was the AIDS epidemic translated into theatre plays? Why is the way we talk about illness important? And what does Susan Sontag have to do with all of that In this episode of In a Nutshell, Antonia and guest Dirk Visser take a look at the way theatre can – and has – tackled heavy topics like AIDS. And why it matters how a story is being told. Dirk Visser has conducted his PhD at the Faculty of Arts research investigates the theatrical response to the AIDS crisis in Britain and America, focusing particularly on those plays that did not enter the canon of English or American drama. His intend is thereby to restore those plays as part within the cultural memory of the AIDS epidemic. This episode is part of a two-part series on politics and theatre. Also tune in for the first episode, which explores the topic of political theatre in general. Edit: Jara Majerus Cover: Antonia Leise

Beyond Google Scholar

Students often struggle to find relevant literature for their thesis projects. The main aim of this tutorial is two-fold, namely to teach students (1) how to find relevant literature using various databases and search strategies and (2) how to critically reflect on the role of digital databases and Generative AI tools in their search process. The package includes a lecturer’s manual and two versions of the same tutorial: one with steps in Excel and one without. The tutorial can be delivered as an in-class workshop (2–3 hours) or assigned as a take-home assignment. The databases and tools used in this tutorial include Zotero, Google Scholar, Project MUSE, JSTOR, ChatGPT, and Excel. The tutorial can be used in any higher education classroom and is particularly suitable for courses that prepare students for writing a BA or MA thesis.

The Politics of Theatre with Ruud van den Beuken | In a Nutshell

How political is theatre? What do plays have to do with Brexit? And how has theatre shaped (and commented on) political developments in the past? In this episode of In a Nutshell, Antonia and guest Ruud van den Beuken explore how political topics can be explored in theatre – and ask the question whether theatre is always the best way to address certain political issues, especially when it comes to class in Britain. Ruud van den Beuken is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Arts. His own theatre research has started with a course on Samuel Beckett and Irish theatre, which was also the topic of his PhD research. Amongst other things, Ruud is researching Brexit theatre, national identity formation (also through theatre) and postcolonial cultural memory. Would you like to learn more about the politics of theatre? Then follow Ruud’s advise and watch some theatre plays yourself. Including Sadettin Kirmiziyuz's Citzen K, available on the NPO streaming service. This episode is part of a two-part series on politics and theatre. Also tune in for the second episode, which explores AIDS theatre. Edit: Jara Majerus Cover: Antonia Leise

VR environment for the course "Lieux de Mémoire"

This is a 3D model of Troy, produced for the course "Lieux de Mémoire. Space, Story and the Construction of Memory". The model was created by the 4D Research Lab of the University of Amsterdam for the project 'Virtual Past Places' in collaboration with course teacher Gert Jan van Wijngaarden. This model contains three scenes based on excavations in Troy, each with a new added phase of reconstruction: the first being the archaeological area, the second the architectural reconstruction and the third being the addition of myths and stories to these finds. A fictional central area forms the fourth scene, with the purpose of giving entry to the other scenes. This model is accessible as a VR room using Hubs Cloud software (virtualplaces-uva.eu). For reproducability and reuse, consult the manual at https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.30490373 and follow the instructions to set up your own Hubs Cloud instance. For the relevant dataset, please use the link to the Zenodo deposition. Funding and context Virtual Past Places has been made possible by a grant, the 'Stimuleringsregeling Online Onderwijs' from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap, OCW), coordinated by SURF, the cooperative association of Dutch educational and research institutions. Virtual Past Places includes open access publication of all developed teaching materials as Open Educational Resources, the development of training materials, and the organisation of inspiration and counselling sessions for peers. In case you're interested in the results of this research project, and/or participate in it, please contact J.Waagen@uva.nl.

TEDx Twente 2025 Albert Wong

Chemist Albert Wong shares how a single lab experiment—turning a blue solution yellow and back again—became the blueprint for designing molecular oscillators and, ultimately, a path toward chemical information processing. He recounts the spark (an acoustic Skunk Anansie concert at Amsterdam’s Royal Theater Carré during his early PhD), the grind of 100+ failed trials and two all-nighters to capture the first stable oscillations, and the shift to automated microfluidic chips that reveal memory and adaptation in reaction networks. Along the way, he bridges chemistry and computing—citing ideas from Turing and Leslie Valiant—to show how molecular systems can store history, respond to their environment, and inspire new, chemically driven algorithms.
